YOU HAVE THE LAST WORD!

Latin opens the door to the minds of the ancients and helps to keep the door open in our own minds.

I wish I had some great philosophical (from Latin philosophia) answer, but the truth is I saw it listed, I signed up as a challenge to myself, and enjoy every day of Ginny's great teaching and enthusiasm, plus the added pleasure of cyber-being with other "seniors".

Because I love learning new things (well, new after a 53 yr. break), and opportunities are not always available in a small town.

First of all hats off to Gene J who made me aware that the program was being offered. I read and publish articles about Thomas Merton, the monk who wrote The Seven Storey Mountain. He wrote extensively and many of his writings are integrated with Latin phrases which I want to translate as I read. Also I want to expand my writing vocabulary and the etymology work is helpful along with the translating --Jack

Initially because I wanted to take the courses that young men of earlier centuries took on their 'Grand Tours'. In studying Latin I find that the grammatical structure and terminology are critical in my study of my other languages. However I really want to share with all of you something that has happened within me since I became a student in this class.

I truly believe it is not only my love of languages but mainly because of the way this class has been developed and delivered to us that has made me feel this excited and at the same time content.

When I was in university I absolutely loved research. My idea of the perfect life was, at that time, spending the rest of my life (I received my B.A. at age 54 after spending 11 years as I had to begin my studies in the evenings while working a full-time job) being a student and doing research. That was my idea of as close to 'heaven' as one could get.

I had brief peeks out from under the toils of geriatric work and other positions but never had the time or energy left to pursue that dream.

Then, after retiring, I found the Senior Classics project...and Latin 101...and of course, our mentor Ginny who's versatility (as long as it is to do with Latin or Rome!!), enthusiasm and most of all her willingness to share with us her joy of the subject, which have brought me to realize that I am now living, in my own small way, MY DREAM.

I also laud...and I mean this from my heart...my classmates in this venture. I once heard a saying which went something like this: 'Find YOUR people or your dream will die.' We have all found each other and my dream is alive and well!!

I have wanted to take Latin since I was a senior in high school and we couldn't get enough for a class. In college with requirements I never got it in. I was doing a google search and found the Senior Classics Latin course.

I decided to study Latin because I was not offered the class when I was in high school. I've always been fascinated by words and word origins. I had already taken an online course and found it a very interesting and fun way to learn. I also very much liked the idea of taking the class with others in my age group. This class has greatly exceeded my expectations.

I have always been fascinated with the language, The church, the medical profession, the law etc.use it. To my surprise I found out that there is a difference between the ecclesiastical and the classical Latin. I am grateful to the project and the staff for their help.

I gave my girl a ring for a present. It had no imperfect..ion, and I thought we had a perfect...ly wonderful future ahead of us, but she thought differently and called the cops who took an active interest in her accusations, and they put me in passive restraints which doesn't make it easy to get to those fun places on the Internet; so I registered for the Senior Classics Latin instead ... sorry, I know this is all most irregular.

I always wanted to learn Latin and never had the opportunity, so when I saw that the Senior Classics project was offering it, I decided to give it a whirl. It has opened up a whole new world to me.

I love history and mainly because I knew it would be a good brain exercise. And it definitely has been that! It makes my world a little larger and more interesting. The very experience of taking a class online has been a good learning experience. Quite amazing how it all works.

I chose to study Latin because I am a writer and am always interested in learning more about languages. I also consider myself a "print freak" and read everything I can get my hands on. I am extremely impressed with the quality of instruction offered by Senior Net and specifically by Barbara in Latin 101 and Jane who did so much work to set us up for the course. Jane was patient and diligent. Barbara is not only knowledgeable, thorough, and prompt, but also has managed to create an active online learning community. I work full time as an instructional designer and write fiction and nonfiction in my "spare time," yet I find myself always making time for Latin homework. It is a wonderful distraction as well as a quality learning experience. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to "speak."

What fun to interact with all of you almost as if we were really together in a classroom. This is great fun, challenging, stimulating, and provides interesting discussion and work with others.

I have an interest in classical civilization. I have read English translations but I would like to read the original works in Latin. Cicero, Ceasar, and Virgil are on my short list. After Latin, I intend to move on to Classical Greek and I would like to read Greek Drama in its original text.

I think Marni summed it up well.Latin is certainly challenging, fun, and most importantly, it gives me something to look forward to each day, along with a drive to learn more and more. It's addictive! For me it also brings back memories of high school days in our Latin class.I had the good fortune to have a great teacher then,as we do now! Looking forward to Latin 102!

"I am a 70 year old retired teacher who is semi disabled. My activities are somewhat curtailed now, but after discovering the Latin course, I have something to look forward to each day. It is the first thing I do in the morning after breakfast. I have received so much satisfaction from studying and learning Latin. I had three years of Latin in high school, but had forgotten most of it, with the exception of agricola and hic haec hoc. I am finding now that I can absorb it so much better, as there is more time to devote to it. Our teacher, Ginny Anderson has been so encouraging, as well as the rest of the class. It is a delight to be able to accomplish this at my age, and to meet(via the web) others who also are achieving success. "

Since I first encountered Latin at age ten I have felt a deep interest in it. My high school offered Latin to College Prep students, but these classes were unavailable to me as business was my chosen curriculum. When I heard about this course last year I saw my golden opportunity to become a Latin student at last. Shelly Vogel

Being an advocate for self improvement, when I saw the Latin course offered, I jumped at the opportunity. I always wanted to speak a foreign language and at that time any language would have done, being German, Spanish, French or what ever, it was Latin! Little realizing the impact this language would have on my daily routine. From the first day I knew I was hooked and would rush through my daily chores anxious to see what was happening next in the great stories. Now that the class is drawing to an end, I realize and appreciate the enrichment and new understanding of Roman Life this course has given me. Thank you Ginny for sharing your wonderful talent of teaching and to my fellow classmates, who enriched the classroom.

I signed up for Latin on the very last day of registration, thinking it would keep me busy over the long winter--Well, little did I know how busy it would keep me. I think it has taken over my life--but I love it. And now it is so exciting that watching "Finding the Queen of Sheba" I could see words written in Latin and I knew what they meant. But, what I treasure most of all are the fabulous people I have met here--my fellow students, our teacher Ginny and the Staff. Vita bona est! (I hope that says Life is good!)
