Blanko!
« on: May 10, 2010, 10:05:24 AM »

Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger poses and indicates either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

The Contestants guess the title or author and post their answer; if they can, the solve the entire title.   They can also suggest another letter to fill in one of the blanks.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved,
the Challenger then must add only  one of the suggested letters the contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new challenger.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

Good Luck !!

Wecome, welcome, welcome to Blanko! As you can see it's sort of like the Vanna White game on TV with a twist!

The blanks, (done by using the underline) each stand for a letter, and will spell out either the title or an author's name. The challenger will say which one we're going for.

The object is to guess the title. You may suggest letters to be entered in place of the blanks too.

At the end of the day if the title or author is NOT guessed, the challenger will then pick and choose from the letters suggested and show every instance of that letter in the title or author's name.

It should  be no end of fun, let's find out: first up:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

I can nominate a letter to be added if I can't get the title, right? If so, I nominate the letter E.

Can we guess a word too?  If so, I guess the first word to be Spirit.

Yes  you can guess words, and titles.

Spirit's not it but it fits!

At the end of the day if it's not guessed, the challenger reserves the right to add ONE of the suggested letters, everywhere it appears, it will be fun for the challenger to pick and choose carefully among the letters suggested, hoping not to give it away!

Ok this is fun! I've got an unsolved challenge:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

I've got two letters suggested today and I get to pick one of them, the one I naturally hope will give the least clue, I can pick from E from Frybabe and N from Sally.

Would you believe NEITHER is in the title?

hahahaa I love this!

Now between this appearance and tomorrow nights, anybody can guess the title, a word in the title and suggest a letter. This is good!

What can it be?

All RIGHT! It sounds like a pep rally, give me an A!  hahahaa I'm enjoying this.

Ok here's the challenge:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

And here are the letters I get to pick from tonight as nobody has guessed the title.

Pedln, no, the middle word is not "of," but a good guess.

Ok which of these will  give away the least?

"A" from Joan K
'O' from Gum
S from Stephanie
L from Sally

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

Now this game has many ramifications. For instance the contestants could gang up on the challenger. What if somebody asks the same letter day  after day but that letter never appears to be chosen by the challenger? The contestants may suspect that letter is a key letter, they could all ban together and give the same letter, I see another Wiz like type thing occurring. Where IS the Book Wizard when you need him?  hahahaa

Ok of the above letters, I only have to put one in. But I have to put ALL the times it occurs. I think the one which will be the least revelatory is A from Joan K, so I will add it now:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ A ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

Very famous book and not only a book a series.

If it is "is" as Pedln asks,  I'd like to try to solve it...

Or if the whole word is not allowed, I'd like an "I"...

Ok I think you know what it is! :)

The way this works is you  in the course of a day, either solve it or suggest a letter.

At the end of the day if nobody has solved the puzzle,  the challenger chooses from the letters submitted  and picks the one least likely to solve the puzzle. :)

So I'll choose L from Jude, my choices here are Pearson's C and Jude's L and I have storms so am here an hour early tonight.

Pedln did correctly get the middle word.

There are no L's in this title.

So the challenge remains for Thursday:

Book Title: Three words:

   ___ A ___ ___ ___ T    IS    ___ ___ ___   ___

Now that the day's events have closed, the contestants can start anew, solve the puzzle or suggest letters.

So I wait until tomorrow and then either try to solve it OR suggest another letter to keep it going?  Maybe I'll do that - if I understand correctly...

Once the challenger comes in for that day to see if anybody has solved the puzzle and to put up ONE letter as many times as it occurs , once he passes by for that day, it's like a new day.

The object is to solve the puzzle, so if you can,  go for it. If you're right, then YOU become the challenger. :)

Yes it is. So you'd want to give the whole title and you're the first winner and the new challenger if you do! As they say on  Wheel of Fortune (I've never watched it) I'd like to solve  it, Alex!

Bingo! Or should I say Blanko! Our very first winner in our new Blanko contest is Pat H  with Rabbit is Rich by John Updike, the Pulitzer Prize winning book in the Rabbit Angstrom series, the first of which was Rabbit, Run.

I really enjoyed this game.

Pat H is our new challenger. Remember you can solve the puzzle at any time between the times she comes back to check and/ or suggest a letter. We'll keep the winners and their book in the heading!

Congratulations, Pat H!   You thought of it in bed?

Steph, I assumed you had guessed the whole title, and were putting it in one word at a time.  If so, you're the winner, since you got "Rabbit" in first.  If not, I'm the winner.  Let me know.

It's ironic that I even thought of it, since I can't stand Updike, and have never been able to read more that 20 pages or so of any of his books.

Oh I loved Rabbit is  Rich and read the second one and one day while reading i woke up and everything looked dark and cynical and awful, and it took me a while to realize I was being influenced by the book itself. He's a powerful writer but it's SOOOOOO depressing and negative, I haven't been able to read one since.

Oh excellent!

Now here's a question for the challenger.  Can we solve parts of the puzzle?

For instance if I think I know two of the words may I say so, or do I have to do the entire thing. If I can't do the title I understand that I can offer a letter.

Sure you can guess parts of the puzzle.  We did that with yours.  And often small words would be easy to guess.  I assume that I have to say right or wrong at least once a day when I check activity and add a letter.

One second.  According to Ginny's post my guess 'of the" doesn't preclude guessing a separate letter as well.
If thats true I guess the letter "E".

And I'll ask if the third word is "the"?

Is there a "t"?

I see a problem. If someone else asks a letter, then I hesitate to, because it might prevent finding out about the first one. So then I'd have to wait til next day (I'm not good at waiting).
