Most of us attended some sort of bricks and mortar school.  The idea of being able to sit in our own homes, dressed however was comfortable and whenever was convenient, and participate in an educational opportunity was a dream.   Now it's a reality.

What sites have you found that offer great educational opportunites?  Let us hear from you and any links you can offer makes it even better!!

Kidsal, thanks for passing these sites along. I didn't know Google had an art site. I copied these links to the Art Gallery discussion over on Senior and Friends. I am not sure you post there.

I looked at the last date stamp and was surprised that no one (including me) has posted here in over a year.

From this morning's Open Culture newsletter.......as schools and colleges moved to be multicultural in the 80s and 90s, some moved away from Western literature. Howard Bloom wrote a book suggesting a "Western Canon" many of which are available for free online. Here's the article and the list along with some audio of Bloom discussing the battle. I wish i could find an interesting MOOC - college class - that discussed them for  me, i'll have to look.

I was kind of proud that I've something that most of the authors wrote. I notice that Elizabeth Gaskell is on the list, but not the book we're currently reading.

The University of Southampton has free short courses. I just signed up for the Archaeology of Portus course which starts in June. At that time I will be on break from the Latin 101 course.

Hi Carola, it looks great. Hope you enjoy it. I took a free course on Roman Architecture from Yale University the year before last. I've been wanting to take more, but haven't taken the time.

I have just returned to Senior Learn after being gone for a number of years.  I have just retired from being a clinical psychologist for 25 years.  At the moment I am browsing and contacting some of you who I knew well and want to continue our relationship.

I have just returned to Senior Learn and want to be active.  I'm not sure what is meant by "education on the internet."  Would some one please expand the definition?

We ask people to post sites they've found that are educational.  The ones that have been suggested are listed in the heading at the top of this page.

The Great Courses offers many of their courses online for about $9 a month.  A wide variety of courses -- about 30 lessons per course.

I know this is an old topic, but it seems to keep resurrecting, so I'm adding my 2 cents.  My employment took me to overseas assignments and doing course work in a remote, on-line setting was a necessity.  It started with me studying for the CPA exam and then continued with my M.P.A. graduate program while duty stationed in Germany.  As a retiree, on-line resources offer me the flexibility I need so that I may continue to enjoy travel and family, as well as accommodating special health related needs that come up without the stress of missing scheduled face to face classes.  I sometimes prefer face to face because I believe eye contact, facial expression, voice tenor and tone all contribute to the quality of communication.  I think we also benefit face to face in building confidence and learning how to speak without offending.  That being said, the internet has certainly opened various educational pursuits to a wide population who would otherwise miss out  And, the benefits of cross-cultural dialogue, even in a virtual classroom, is so important in a global society.  So, I am forever grateful for the advent of the Internet and education, and the wonderful teachers who support our desire for continuing education.
Beneficia!

You've summed up the pros and cons of internet learning beautifully, Betta.  Both the face-to-face and the online offer diversity  that, I think, can benefit every student....young and old.

Totally agree! Love the internet, but enjoy being with groups of people face-to-face.

I’ve looked thru the list and read your postings, I don’t think anyone has listed edx.org. It’s also college courses, or videos sponsored by colleges. if you “audit” the course, I think most of them are free. Look at it when you have a free afternoon - it can be a real trip down the rabbit hole.

I’m looking at one sponsored by Columbia U and the NY Historical Society titled “Women Have Always Worked. “
