Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name)  and post their answer.  If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they  can also suggest one of the title words or  a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only  one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Don't feel guilty. If we were restricted to only books we were sure everyone had heard of, we'd have run out of books a long time ago. the Bible, hmmm what else?

Okay, I know it, but I cheated by using a reference book and I'm not going to name it.  It was just driving me nuts and I didn't want to spend any more time trying to figure it out.

And, I have one of the author's books on my book shelf, and on the cover it also listed the above title -- so for sure, it does exist.

Great choice, deems2, even if everyone is tearing their hair out.

It's got to be Oracle Night.

I was guessing the title, but having done so I looked it up.  I see it's by Paul Auster, who I've certainly heard of.  I read his City of Glass, which is rather strange, but fascinating and compelling.

I've heard Auster mentioned before somewhere. Has anyone read his works, and if so, what did you think of it/them? A lot of his work centers on writers and ambiguous identity. Do you think Auster himself has questions about his identity? His work sounds positively steeped in psychological questions. I am thinking of adding Timbuktu and Travels in a Scriptorium to my TBR list.

Good for you, PatH.

I picked up his Brooklyn Follies from the bargain table, but haven't read it or any of his other works yet.  Along with Pete Hamill many of his books are set in New York.

Simply could not come up with the word Oracle until I finally went to "OR" in the dictionary.  What a stumper.  Also stumping was that light, might, sight, night, right, etc. etc. etc.

Frybabe, pedln, the main character in City of Glass is a writer, living in New York, and the book deals with identity and reality in an increasingly surreal way.  It's quite a strange book, and I would think a person would either love it or hate it.  I read it through nonstop (it's short) and felt pretty overwhelmed by the end.

YAYAYAYAYAYAY!

WINNER!  WINNER!  WINNER!  GREAT JOB, PATH!

I think he is a fascinating writer.  After I picked up this book and read it through, I read most of the others.  Now whenever he writes a book, I read it.  And I have heard him read in person.  In addition to what has already been mentioned, he has a very dry sense of humor - which I love.  There is also a lot of philosophy in his books - not as abstract ideas, but as living characters playing out abstract ideas.   Nevertheless, his characters are very down to earth.  They are full of flaws - just like real people - and for me, that makes them more real.

Sorry for choosing someone so obscure.  I didn't actually realize he was.

Gum, I was afraid this one would be unfair to you, but it's hard to be even-handed.  The book is probably the most popular of the "first cookbooks" here.  It has over 4000 recipes, sections on techniques, warnings about trouble spots, etc.  I happen to have started with another cookbook, so I don't use it much, but I do own it, and it's very good.
