JoanK, I like the series. It set in Rome and other environs during Vespasian's reign. Davis's historical background seems to be quite accurate as far as everyday life is concerned. Each book in the series brings out another aspect of Roman life in that period. My favorites, beside this one are Silver Pigs, the first of the series set in Roman Britain about the lead and silver mining and The Iron Hand of Mars, which is set in what is today's Germany and includes life in a Roman fort and the famous German Redware pottery. Other notable settings include the wild animal importation business, gladitorial games, the building of a Fishbourne like palace, a troupe of actors in the outlying middle eastern colonies, the Alexandrian Library, site-seeing in Greece, the banking business, the scroll copying business, a Spanish olive plantation, and so on.
