BLANKO

Welcome to our newest brain teaser

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, not both.  One letter is supplied.  More information may be given, but isn't required.

Example:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess--the title (or author) if they can, or a letter.  One guess between appearances of the Challenger for each contestant.

At  the end of the day, or more often if the Challenger wants, the Challenger will add one or more of the letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.  (Note that the original supplied letter might also appear elsewhere.)

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Even without the T, I think I see the title, Fry -

Murder at Monticello?

Oh dear, I forgot to answer the T.

That being said, JoanP, you have just WON yourself an accolade. Indeed, it is Murder at Monticello.

By Jane Langton? One of my favorite mystery writers, although not that book, necessarily. I liked "Murder at the Gardner" (based on the Gqrdner museum in Boston. Or maybe The Memorial Hall murder, based on Handel's Massiah..

Looking at this, I see several ones I haven't read. But the Escher one was such a disappointment, I stopped looking for her.

Thanks for the "accolade," Fry!

An interesting plan, JoanK...just pick the famous location, insert a murder - voila!  Instant plot!

Another piece of fiction - an oldie, though not ancient...

An O please.

Never heard of Jane Langden, JoanP. Mine was one of the Sneaky Pie mysteries by Rita Mae Brown. The title is right and that is what counts.  BTW, I noticed in the header that we can use an author name, too, either along or with the title. I don't think we ever tried that.

haha, no I never heard of  Jane Langden's novels either, Fry!  I was just reading what JoanK had posted about another book of the same title!  Rita Mae and I go back quite a while though.

An "O"?  Not a single one...

E's?

JoanP: "An interesting plan, JoanK...just pick the famous location, insert a murder - voila!  Instant plot!"

You couldn't be more wrong. Each of her books follows in detail some piece of music or work of art. The Memorial hall Murder follows the score of Handel's Messiah in the ups and downs, including a magnificent Hallelujah Chorus. Murder at the Gardner takes one painting from the Gardner and builds a plot that follows the details of the painting. There's others based on Dante's Inferno, a Bach Mass etc.

They do sound interesting, JoanK.  Well constructed.

"E's" - no, but there are two "A's" - they should help -

After a blank stare yesterday, another look today comes up with As I Lay Dying. My sister read it years ago and liked it. I got stuck with A Light in August and hated it.

WINNER! WINNER! WINNER!

Isn't funny - the moment the title jumps out at you?  We listened to "Light in August"  as we drove across the country one summer...and loved it.  Sometimes it takes a good story teller to bring a good story to life.  Someone suggested "As I Lay Dying"  for October Book Club Online.  What do you think?

Sorry JoanP, I can't comment on As I Lay Dying because I never read it. Despised Light in August so much that I never picked up another Faulkner.

Here is something a little different. Hint: The subject is archaeology/travel.

Since it's travel/archaeology, I want the last word to be Samarkand.  But even if it is, I don't know what the book is.

JoanP, I meant to comment on As I Lay Dying.  I think I don't like Faulkner, but the few times I've started one of his books, I've read it straight through, and that's what happened with this book.  I found it in a beach house years ago when I couldn't sleep.  That killed the night for me, and part of the next day.  Faulkner does a superb job of putting you inside the heads of all his characters, and I couldn't stand any of them, and was terribly relieved to say goodbye to them all at the end.  Still, I couldn't stop reading, and it is a very good book.  Don't know if I could stand those people for a month, though.

I don't know if I'm saying it would be a good choice or a bad choice here.  Why don't you have a look at it?

I've never heard of the book, but looking at it, I'm seeing From Stonehenge to Samarkand.
