BLANKO

Welcome to our newest brain teaser

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, not both.  One letter is supplied.  More information may be given, but isn't required.

Example:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess--the title (or author) if they can, or a letter.  One guess between appearances of the Challenger for each contestant.

At  the end of the day, or more often if the Challenger wants, the Challenger will add one or more of the letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.  (Note that the original supplied letter might also appear elsewhere.)

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

A good choice, JoanP

___  ___  ___  ___

___  ___  ___  F  F  ___  ___  ___

Letters chosen:
N, F,

There is one R

___  ___  ___  ___

___  ___  ___  F  F  ___  R  ___

Letters used: N, F, R

I'm thinking that the author of this book that no one has read is probably more well-known than the title.  There is actually a contest that is named for him, though the reward is supposed to be a pittance.

PatH, using JoanK's computer:

Even if none of us ever heard of the book, we'll get it in 26 guesses or less. :)

No S, I afraid, but since I'm thinking this was kind of unfair, we'll allow two letters from one person.

___  ___  ___  ___

___  ___  ___  F  F  O  R D

Letters used: D, E, F,  N, O,  R, S,  Y

It will be a dark and stormy night before you get this one.

Oh Good Grief, Charlie Brown! Reminds me of Snoopy's attempts at writing a novel.

Quote
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents — except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.
-
-Paul Clifford by Edward Bulwar-Lytton.

I just love the writings of those 19th century authors. Lest the author's name rings no bells his book, The Last Days of Pompeii, should do; it has been made and remade into movies and a TV miniseries (1984). The Germans made a musical out of ihn in 2008. Also, several of his books were adapted for opera.

WINNER!!!   WINNER!!!   WINNER!!!

Bravo, Frybabe.  And no doubt Snoopy could win the Bulwar-Lytton prize given each year for the worst opening sentence in a novel.  I didn't realize B-L had written The Last Days of Pompeii.  Will have to check the opening sentence there.

And, since it is a dark and stormy night here, I'm off to curl up in bed with a good cozy mystery.

Yes, yes, yes. JoanP is the Winner!

Have you read it? It is Fraser's first foray writing about someone outside of Britain. I am wondering if it has much if anything to say about the preparations that were made up river from me for her escape to America had she made it.

No, I haven't read it, Fry, though I've heard that it is well-researched  and objective, written from first hand accounts.  Was the "journey" in the  title the journey she was planning to America?

New one - this is non Fiction, I think.

Just started reading it today.

A Brave Vessel by Hobson Woodward.

Up next, from a very well known, prodigious American writer (deceased), but not a well known book, I think.

It's the book that they are talking about in the pre-Tempest discussion, PatH. Will you join us? The Sea Venture was one of eight ships headed to Jamestown when it was separated from the rest of the fleet by a hurricane. William Strachey was onboard and wrote an account of the storm and the days they were shipwrecked on Bermuda in a long letter. The letter got passed around, Shakespeare got wind of it and drew his inspiration for The Tempest from Strachey's account.

Thanks, Frybabe.  I've joined The Tempest, wouldn't miss it for anything, but because of other things have not followed the pre-discussion.  I've got my book, and will catch up before the discussion starts.
