BLANKO

Welcome to our newest brain teaser

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, not both.  One letter is supplied.  More information may be given, but isn't required.

Example:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess--the title (or author) if they can, or a letter.  One guess between appearances of the Challenger for each contestant.

At  the end of the day, or more often if the Challenger wants, the Challenger will add one or more of the letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.  (Note that the original supplied letter might also appear elsewhere.)

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

I cannot let this pass.  This author wrote more non-fiction, some of which is very near.

Well, I'm the one who should get it...

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc.   Is this Mark Twain's?

It is.  I've even read it, but I wasn't there yet.  Good work, JoanP.  I would call it fiction, though.

Yes! JoanP is the winner.

Except for Life on the Mississippi, I didn't know he wrote nonfiction. I've downloaded it on my Kindle to read some time. I thought The Innocents Abroad was a novel and Roughing It always makes me think of Teddy Roosevelt. Both of those are listed as travel.

The Innocents Abroad and Roughing It are more or less autobiographical.  Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc is historical fiction, I think pretty accurate.  Twain wrote another historical fiction book, The Prince and the Pauper, in which a London street boy accidentally changes places for a while with Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII and the future Edward VI.  He also wrote a sort of sci-fi/time travel book, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, in which the protagonist wakes up from a head wound to find he is back in the time of King Arthur.  He tries to improve things by introducing modern technology.  Both Prince and Yankee include a lot of social criticism, which pretty much totally blew by me when I read them as a teenager.  I should probably reread them.

Isn't that interesting. My source listed the Joan of Arc as nonfiction, but on checking, Wikipedia and another literary site list it as fiction. I don't remember which site I got that said it was nonfiction, but I do remember it said that Joan of Arc was an ongoing interest for Mark Twain. Of course, I can't find anything of the sort now.

Fry, years ago we discussed this book - could have been when we were SeniorNet.  I remember it was difficult to find the book in my library - it was under a different author...Louis de Conte, I think.   I was looking under Clemens - Twain.  Here's more about it ...  I still find it really curious, Mark Twain's interest in Joan of Arc.  I think it had something to do with his daughter, but not clear about that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Recollections_of_Joan_of_Arc

My turn: this is fiction, I am quite sure.  Need to find out more about it...where it came from.  I think it is based on a non-Fiction account, but it is fiction.

The Sot-Weed Factor

Haven't read it, have only heard the name.  Can't tell you what it's about.

Assuming that's correct, I'll be back soon with a title of sorts that you must get by Sunday night because I'm going into the hospital at 8 am Monday, for minor surgery on Wednesday. Early, but, there is always the heparin thing.

The Sot-Weed Factor...  "Picaresque novel by John Barth, originally published in 1960 and revised in 1967. A parody of the historical novel, it is based on and takes its title from a satirical poem published in 1708 by Ebenezer Cooke, who is the protagonist of Barth's work. The novel's black humor is derived from its purposeful misuse of conventional literary devices."

I've a son, a prolific reader - two, three books a week.  He  belongs to the Good Reads site - in which he posts books he is  reading and just completed. Whenever he posts, I get an email notification.  I must have signed on to Good Reads at some point to get this notification.  I enjoy seeing what he's reading. He ranks these books...usually gives nothing higher than four stars. But Sot Weed Factor got five stars - with a comment from son that now he sees why he could never become a writer.  High praise.  I just had to pick up a copy to see what it was that elicited this comment.

I started to read it - and was intrigued.  But after about 100 pages, I tired of the black humor - and gave up on it.  Now I'm wondering if I gave up too soon.  I was hoping that someone of you had read it years ago and could encourage me to check it out again...

On the title above - there must be an "S" on Rebels...are there more than one?

JoanP, I started The Sotweed Factor many years ago, and also didn't finish it, not sure why.  I do remember it was very well written, very rich prose.
