BLANKO

Welcome to our newest brain teaser

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, not both.  One letter is supplied.  More information may be given, but isn't required.

Example:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess--the title (or author) if they can, or a letter.  One guess between appearances of the Challenger for each contestant.

At  the end of the day, or more often if the Challenger wants, the Challenger will add one or more of the letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.  (Note that the original supplied letter might also appear elsewhere.)

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

One E:

___  ___  E

___  ___  ___

O  F

___  ___  ___  ___  ___  ___  ___

Letters guessed: E, F

Good for you, pedln, you got it before anyone asked for more Os, which would have been a giveaway.  No, I haven't cooked much today, but cooking is definitely my thing.

This book was on my list at one time.  I don't know if I've read it or not.  My library has it, but looking at the review I don't think I've read this non-fiction childhood memoir.

I haven't read this, but looking at the blurbs, it reminded me of the mothers on Guernsey at the advent of WWII.

WINNER!!   WINNER!!  WINNER!!

That's it, by Carlos Eire, who was one of those Cuban children sent to the States by their parents so they would not have to live under the Castro regime.  He was about eleven years old, and my understanding is that he never saw his father again.

There were several Cuban families in our neighborhood when we lived in Puerto Rico in the 60's and 70's.  One of the families was the elderly parents, their daughter and her son, who had been born when his mother was in prison.  Just before we left PR we heard that the husband and father had been released and would be able to join them soon.  We knew other Cubans there who had family or friends still imprisoned by Castro.

Another book on my TBR list is Telex from Cuba, about US citizens living in Cuba just before the end of the Batista regime.

Pedln, did I ever get around to asking you, how is your Spanish after those years in Puerto Rico?

A book I recently read for my f2f sci-fi group overlaps a bit with similar themes: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Díaz.  It deals with Dominicans, exiles in Patterson, NJ, and back in the Dominican Republic, the oppression under Trujillo, and the young people's romantic lives both places.  It's very well-written, but unfortunately it mostly deals with the efforts of the young people to make out, and it's got a lot of crudity, both in English and Spanish.  It's only relevant to sci-fi because Oscar is preoccupied with it, but to get the most out of the book you should recognize the s-f references and also be able to understand the bits of Spanish the family members throw at each other.  (I could get a lot of it, but had to guess at the profanity.)  And the descriptions of oppression are pretty depressing.  A Dominicana in our group said the family life was very accurately depicted.

It's really good writing, though, and Díaz has gotten the Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur "genius" grant.
