Pedln, did I ever get around to asking you, how is your Spanish after those years in Puerto Rico?
A book I recently read for my f2f sci-fi group overlaps a bit with similar themes: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Díaz. It deals with Dominicans, exiles in Patterson, NJ, and back in the Dominican Republic, the oppression under Trujillo, and the young people's romantic lives both places. It's very well-written, but unfortunately it mostly deals with the efforts of the young people to make out, and it's got a lot of crudity, both in English and Spanish. It's only relevant to sci-fi because Oscar is preoccupied with it, but to get the most out of the book you should recognize the s-f references and also be able to understand the bits of Spanish the family members throw at each other. (I could get a lot of it, but had to guess at the profanity.) And the descriptions of oppression are pretty depressing. A Dominicana in our group said the family life was very accurately depicted.
It's really good writing, though, and Díaz has gotten the Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur "genius" grant.
