BLANKO

Welcome to our newest brain teaser

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, not both.  One letter is supplied.  More information may be given, but isn't required.

Example:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess--the title (or author) if they can, or a letter.  One guess between appearances of the Challenger for each contestant.

At  the end of the day, or more often if the Challenger wants, the Challenger will add one or more of the letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.  (Note that the original supplied letter might also appear elsewhere.)

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

S __ __ __ __ T

__ __ __ S E S

That should help.

Your pure guess is correct, JoanP. You get the blue ribbon.

WINNER     WINNER    WINNER    WINNER    WINNER

I have had trouble tracking down, with the little time I spent on it, the true nature of the spirit horse in the Native American tradition. What I mostly get on Googling is organizations such as therapy horses and rescue outfits, and as stated before music, calendars and the like. Somewhere in there, there has to be an explanation of the origins of the spirit horse rather than a commercialized version. I am assuming that not all horses are spirit horses. Are they real horses that are "soul mates" or a spirit vision of a horse that provides help and guidance in times of need?

OK, this is fiction, not new...more clues to come...
You may decide you want to read it.. (If you haven't already read it.)

You were a spirited kid, Fry - more so than I.  I did WANT a horse though.  Every birthday, Christmas, I asked for one...always disappointed.  Thought that whatever you wished for on Christmas, it would be there under the tree...

Yes, there is an O -

I?

Is the book "Spirit Horses" about them? (That sounds like a silly question, but I'm intrigued).

JoanK, it's a novel how a farm owner finds a spirit horse on his farm and his journey to return the horse to her home in Wyoming. http://www.amazon.com/Spirit-Horses-Alan-S-Evans/dp/1933515252

Here is the author's website. He certainly knows his way around horses. http://www.alansevans.com/meet.html The interview on his website answers my question about spirit horses in Native American beliefs and history. He couldn't find anything referring to that name either. I do know that Native Americans believed in animal spirits and there are a few tales of ghost horses about. Spirit Horse appears, for the most part, to be mostly a modern term for therapy horses or the businesses that run them.

I've given you both letters, and then off until this evening...maybe you'll have it by then, and then I'll tell you the connection to upcoming March selection!

JoanP, it wasn't until I thought "flossing my father" that I realized you had left out an "O".

I'm not claiming victory because I have an unfair advantage, right here in my hand.

Look at the next word?  Are you sure there is not another O?  And your first letter S -- are there any more of them?

I've been waiting for FRY or Pedlin. They guessed the C and S, so I thought one of them must have it. It muust be "Crossing to Safety" by Wallace Stegner.

FRY or PEDLIN:, if you knew it, I'll gladly give up my turn.

I'll be back soon with the reason why Stegner's book will be of interest in the coming weeks...

Congratulations JoanK.  JoanP's remark about the March book selection was the big tip-off to me.  I'd just finished The End of YOur Life Book Club and was sitting at the computer with it in my hand. Crossing to Safety is the first chapter, plus they have all the titles listed in the back of the book.

I have caught myself referring to this book as The End of Your LIfe Cook Book. Please don't let me do that.

I hope everyone will join us in what should be a fascinating discussion that can go off in all kinds of directions.

Pedlin: you get the win. I haven't looked at "End of zYour Life" and would never have got it without your "C".

read "Crossing" years ago. Not as good as :" Angle of repose", but good.
