I see three words, but it isn't a title I know. Can't get the first and fourth.
word order
2. Friendship
3. Courtship
5. Marriage

Anybody know this one? Looks like a sequence.

Sorry, tried to post at the same time Pat.

Wild guess:

Dateship
Friendship
Courtship
Loveship
Marriage.

Or the first word could be Hateship?

You've got it JOanK.  Hateship it is.  A collection of short stories by Alice Munro from a few years ago.  I had to get something in here related to our short story series.

I don't know about "smart" JoanK - it's just spooky sensing.  The really funny thing - when I first looked at your grid, even before Frybabe guessed the "N" I "saw" The Magic Mountain - but thought  I didn't have enough to go on.  As soon as I saw those Ns go in, I know I had really seen it!  Spooky!

Last month my husband and I celebrated our big joint birthday party with extended family from all over.  Their gifts were so touching, so personal.  Some of the books we received were published the year we were born.  I'm enjoying one of them now. Very familiar title, but don't remember reading it before.  I won't give the year, but you now know the general "era" the book was written.  That's your hint>  do you "see"? :D

Your spelling is fine Pedln. My first love reading books as a child was horses or westerns (odd that I never read Zane Grey thought). Mysteries came second.

I knew Misty by name only, Frybabe, but knew of the island, as friends had visited there.

No, there is no E, at least, not in this title.  However, in its elongated form, one of these words could contain an E.  I'm sure that's a big clue for everyone.     :-\

You scared me for a moment, PatH.  I thought I'd left out a word.

___  ___  ___  ___  ___
