Unless you're a kid, this probably isn't a household title, but are there any math majors here?

Carry On, Mr Bowditch

I didn't know there was a children's book about him.  Do you remember Marni, on the old SeniorNet?  Nathaniel Bowditch was her hero as a child, and a very good one to have too.  His navigational tables are still in use.

I decided that Marni had me beat for offbeat childhood heroes.  Mine was Raymond Lee ditmars, the herpetologist.

WINNER!!   WINNER!!   WINNER!!

Good for you, PatH.  I read it in one of my Children's Lit classes and it's always been a favorite.  Won the Newbery Award in 1956.  Good Middle School material.

If you want some more obscure childhood heroes, how about Snowflake Bentley, about Wilson Bentley, one of the first to photograph snowflakes.

I just saw on TV: they have improved technology for photographing snowflakes now -- can photo them while they are falling, so don't get the partial melting that Bentley had to get when he caught them. They think having a more accurate idea of there shape will help them understand blizzards better. They didn't explain how.
