     WINNER WINNER WINNER

Good work, Marj.  Has anyone else read the book?  The author, Michael Chwe, is a political science professor at UCLA.  He had never touched Austen's books until 8 years ago he watched the movie Clueless, based on Emma, with his children.  He was amazed at the amount of game-type manipulation, and started in to read the novels.  He came out of it convinced that it's not simply the case that you can analyze the books using game theory; Jane Austen is the unacknowledged founder of the discipline.  He proceeds to a lengthy analysis of various principles, copiously illustrated by examples from the books.

It's a book for Austen nuts like me.  If you haven't read all the books you will be lost, because there are many quick examples on each page, told with the assumption that you know the players.  So far, I'm not totally convinced, but I'm having fun.

I haven't read it, Pat, but it sounds like it might be interesting.  I haven't read much Jane Austen.  Read a couple when I was young, and have watched some of the films made of her books.

Here goes another puzzle:

Fiction.  Fascinating but rather strange book.   Not by an American novelist.

I've heard of Jane Austen, Game Theorist. Interesting proposition. I tried to learn a little game theory from one of those online college courses, but it didn't work.

Are there any N's?

Congratulation Pat!

Yes, I've read it.  Also others by Kobo Abe including THE RUINED MAP.  I'd like to see the movie of WOMAN IN THE DUNES.  Have you read it?

WOMAN IN THE DUNES is a short book  (only about 240 pp), easy to read, and one you would probably never forget.  Just a strange story.  Abe is said to have been influenced by Kafka whom I have not read.  Just get ready to spit out the sand from your mouth after you've finished it (LOL).

If you like mysteries, I really liked OUT by another Japanese writer, a female, Natsuo Kirino.  About a woman who accidently kills her abusive husband.  She then asks four of her co-workers at the lunch box factory where they work, to help her dispose of his body.  It's a page turner.   Oh, I see she has a new book out that looks interesting - The Goddess Chronicle.
