Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name)  and post their answer.  If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they  can also suggest one of the title words or  a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only  one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Ah female author...that's it - Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, it has to be.  Deems2, didn't we attend a reading at the Folger years ago?

Oh gosh!  Bel Canto-one of my favorite books.
There's another book that starts with a birthday party and a girl looking out the window and seeing two people kiss..  It's famous but I can't remember the title. There was a movie made of it as well.

congratulations, JoanP, you are really good at this.

Jude, I was thinking that the book you were thinking of would be Atonement, but after checking, I see it's not.

WINNER! WINNER! WINNER!

Excellent, JoanP!  I think we did go hear her read at the church across from the Folger.  I know I heard her there.  I think I remember hearing Frank McCourt there with you as well.  It is hard to give clues to Bel Canto and not mention music.

WINNER! WINNER! WINNER!  YOU'RE IT!

I remember that reading - your mom was there too - told Ann P that she was going to use the book for one of her classes the next semester - When the author asked her if she enjoyed the ending - in her own inimitable style, your mom told the author that she hadn't finished it! :D  How Ann P laughed at this admission!

So I'm it, huh?  Bad timing - we're on the way out of town for the next four days - a wedding, son's birthday, Halloween duty with the grandkids - and then home.  I'll tell you what - I'll give you a short title -

 - Whoever gets here first wins...   A clue?

Ha ha, at first glance, after seeing Frank McCourt's name above, I was going to say TIS, but the S is in the wrong place.  Are you sure that's where you want it to be?     :P

Then, it's USA, but I couldn't think of the author -- you know that feeling when you're searching deep within the mind, and nothing comes up.  The cobwebs finally parted -- Dos Passos, but that's the name of the trilogy, not the actual novel.    :-\

We're out of town until Tuesday, but I managed to grab some computer time this evening.  Pedln, you're right - USA is the name of the Trilogy...by Dos Passos.  I thought you'd think it was Tis until I remembered I'd have to provide a letter - and then knew it was a giveaway!  So Pedln, you are it!  Will look forward to seeing you and others in Excellent Women - in the morning!

JoanK, it's good to see that your computer is fixed - just in time for the Pym discussion.  Hope you will join us.

Well, it looks like the only way you're going to get it is by author

The author was at one time a co-host for Candid Camera and also played in films Five Easy Pieces and Crazy in Alabama

But the author's birth name was already in use in Hollywood, so the author had to pick another name -- the one on the books.

Bravo, Fran.  Yes.  A Redbird Christmas is it.  Congratulations.

Someone said that the real place setting of the book was Magnolia Springs, Alabama.

Did you know that Fannie Flagg's birth name was Patricia Neal -- born 9/21/44.  And of course, that name was already taken by another well-known actress.

Flannie Flagg, by the way, has a new book coming out -- tomorrow, if fact.  I Still Dream About You.
