Well there must be a K or a G.  Let's try a G since who refers to a person.

WINNER!

PatH

My library partner on Friday lent me the book because the "brain in a box" character came to mind when she read John Scalzi's, Locked In. This is my first Ann McCaffery.

I've read some Ann McCaffrey, but not that one.  My memory is that the McCaffrey experts in the Sci-fi site liked it a lot, so you'll have someone to compare notes with.  Looking at the premise, it seems to me it has a faint resemblance to a short story by Cordwainer Smith--The Lady Who Sailed the Soul.  Have you read any of him?  His short stories (he only wrote one full-length book) are strange, and archaic, and use the conventions of Chinese storytelling.
