Well there must be a K or a G. Let's try a G since who refers to a person.

WINNER!
PatH
My library partner on Friday lent me the book because the "brain in a box" character came to mind when she read John Scalzi's,
Locked In
. This is my first Ann McCaffery.

I've read some Ann McCaffrey, but not that one. My memory is that the McCaffrey experts in the Sci-fi site liked it a lot, so you'll have someone to compare notes with. Looking at the premise, it seems to me it has a faint resemblance to a short story by Cordwainer Smith--
The Lady Who Sailed the Soul
. Have you read any of him? His short stories (he only wrote one full-length book) are strange, and archaic, and use the conventions of Chinese storytelling.
