Nope, it ruled out Charity's for the first word.
OOOOOOOH, I got it. Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.
Reading a publisher's review of the book on Amazon, I am reminded that my Dad was in London then. He was next door to a building that got struck by the rockets. I don't remember whether it was a V1 or V2, but I do remember that he said if you hear one, you don't worry. You only worry when you stop hearing it. Apparently that is when they dropped. I've never read a Pynchon book and from the customer reviews, I am not likely to be one who has the patience to get through it. The reviews were certainly interesting though. I especially liked the one who gave tips on how to read it; it suggested reading V first as it is similar but shorter. If you like that, then tackle Gravity's Rainbow.
PS: I might try his Vineland.
