Nope, it ruled out Charity's for the first word.

OOOOOOOH, I got it. Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon.

Reading a publisher's review of the book on Amazon, I am reminded that my Dad was in London then. He was next door to a building that got struck by the rockets. I don't remember whether it was a V1 or V2, but I do remember that he said if you hear one, you don't worry. You only worry when you stop hearing it. Apparently that is when they dropped. I've never read a Pynchon book and from the customer reviews, I am not likely to be one who has the patience to get through it. The reviews were certainly interesting though. I especially liked the one who gave tips on how to read it; it suggested reading V first as it is similar but shorter. If you like that, then tackle Gravity's Rainbow.

PS: I might try his Vineland.

     WINNER WINNER WINNER

Good work, Frybabe.

It was the V1s whose motors cut out just before they dropped.  The V2s were rockets, and just shot straight to wherever they landed.

I tried reading Gravity's Rainbow when it came out, and liked it, but wasn't able to persist in working as hard as you had to in order to make any sense of it.  It's wonderfully rich and complicated.  Maybe someday I'll pick it up again.

The only Pyncheon I've read all of is The Crying of Lot 49, which is shorter and less complicated than most of his stuff.   Wikipedia gives a good description:

Quote
Although more concise and linear in its structure than Pynchon's other novels, its labyrinthine plot features an ancient, underground mail service known as "The Tristero" or "Trystero", a parody of a Jacobean revenge drama called The Courier's Tragedy, and a corporate conspiracy involving the bones of World War II American GIs being used as charcoal cigarette filters. It proposes a series of seemingly incredible interconnections between these events and other similarly bizarre revelations that confront the novel's protagonist, Oedipa Maas.

Wild guess produces a WINNER!

Yes, Les Standiford wrote about the short-lived Key West Railway built by Henry Flagler. It gets good reviews from readers even though Publisher's Weekly panned in when it was published. I've got it and one Standiford wrote about Carnegie on my library wish list. That doggone list is getting long.
