The Library
Our library cafe is open 24/7, the welcome mat is always out.
Do come in from daily chores and spend some time with us.

We look forward to hearing from you, about you and the books you are enjoying (or not).

Let the book talk begin here!

FUN!  I'm loving it!

Judy sounds like me.  I still have the habit of roaming off on my own. Seeing what I can find.
I have not seen a whole lot of the Georgia area but after reading lots of books ,the stories being in that state then I aim to try and get down there this fall.  Savannah for sure.  I read that book . Loved it

John has a paperback book about the rigging on his rowing shell.  It got soaked in the recent flooding of the boathouse.  A replacement from amazon is $50.00 used.   :o  Any suggestions on a good way for him to dry out his book?

Maybe like a cell phone that has gotten wet:  Immerse it in a bowl of rice (dry, of course!)

Mary, we've always put ours on a table in the sun but we've never had a flood, either and I see from these two links from the Delaware Library and the U of Michigan, that's possibly not the best choice.

Ginny - I heard that about freezing books to prevent mold in first 48 hours...if still wet, I'd do that right away.  Also, never put the book in the microwave.  Actually, I've never had this experience - but a $50 book is worth the attempt.

Did you try Abe's Books, Thrift Books to see if they had a copy?

Good luck with your book, MaryZ.

Well, the Tweet was right -- the Man Booker Longlist is very diverse.  I won't say the authors are obscure, but many are not household names, and some of the titles have yet to be released.

I'm  familiar with Jhumpa Lahiri from Will Schwalbe's book, The End of Your Life Book Club discussed here, not so long ago.  At a reading from his book a month or so ago, Will referred to her several times.  The name is so distinctive, you can't forget it!

She's nominated for the Booker prize  for her new book - The Lowland -  won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her first book, ''Interpreter of Maladies''  a collection of stories evoking the isolation  South Asian immigrants in America. She is quite young, born in India, raised in Rhode Island.

The book is one of those spiral bound books.  He's taken the pages out, and is drying them in the screened porch.  Once I saw the book, I suggested he iron each page.   ::)  That's a big joke around here.  Under no circumstances do I EVER iron! And I didn't offer to do this for him. But I do have an iron, just no ironing board.  He could do it on a towel.  But he hasn't taken me up on the suggestion yet.  LOL

My Year of Meats: A Novel by Ruth Ozeki has been on my list - the description says she uses humor in her stories. This new one on the Booker Mann list sounds more introspective.

I am looking forward to reading Jim Crace's Harvest Sounds like it is about the time just after Lark Rise to Candleford

That's quite an interesting list, and quite a few not yet out. Several of those look very interesting, to me. I haven't read any of them.

I just found out what a hashtag is for, so am trying it out, let's try #Deltaairlines.

Didn't work. Perhaps you have to embed the link first? Am tired of seeing hashtags on everything but when I put one in, nothing happens. Back to the drawing board! :)

How about #Manbookerlonglist2013

Nope! :)

I suppose it is some kind of short cut link, Ginny??? I have an old cell phone that I think I can text on, but I am not interested in using it. I assume that is what little envelope is at the top corner of my screen.

I've added a second book trailer/author interview link to my Roku box channels. I haven't really looked at it closely yet.  The other one, which is sponsored by Simon and Schuster, includes interviews with Mary Beard among others. Last month I signed up for a Publisher's Weekly newsletter.

Oh!

Well no wonder it doesn't work!

Thank you, Winchester Lady!

Still trying to get over watching the Duchess of Cambridge walking downstairs carrying an 8 lbs. 6 oz. baby yesterday!

Woman is superwoman. It hadnt even been 24 hours. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have done that.

Mine were eight and 10 pounds, respectively. I do well to walk down steps now much less carrying 8 pounds not even 24 hours after having a baby! Not only downstairs. Downstairs, upstairs, and back down a different set again.   I thought you were supposed to avoid  stairs after childbirth?  She is incredible!

Loved  that little "wave" they are calling it, from the baby's hands. That was so cute. Happy day of good news for a change.

And then there was an article via Twitter -- NYT, maybe --

The Royal Birth -- 15K, half that of the average American birth -- $30K.

Loved The Namesake, both book and film.

Thank you, WinchesterLady, for that info.  I'm familiar only with Twitter and Facebook, but am not sure what to do with the hashtags.

I agree, Ginny.  I couldn't believe that Kate should be walking down those stairs in her high heels carrying their baby. I think that's when the father, William, should have carried him.

I was also a bit worried when William lifted that basket by its one handle and put it in their car.  I thought the baby was in the basket and if that handle broke, that might be the end of bonny prince what's-his-name.  But maybe the baby wasn't yet in the basket.

Ginny and Pedln -- I'm not very familiar with Twitter, hashtags, etc.  I only have a Twitter account because my son showed me how to do it.  The only time I've used it was to get updates on a trial I was watching on TV.  Anyway, I've always had a hard time understanding hashtags and the whole idea of "tweeting".  So I just googled an explanation of a hashtag and found the following webpage which did a good job of explaining it:

http://www.techforluddites.com/2009/02/the-twitter-hash-tag-what-is-it-and-how-do-you-use-it.html

Hope this helps.  I still don't think I'll ever become a tweeter!

I like the website title, "Tech for Luddites". Here, we have our Technophobe discussion. Although we are not necessarily phobic or opposed to new technology, some of us are just a little confused by some of it.

Steph just ignore the requests from folks who you do not know - it is like the phone that regardless you have your name on the no call list the unwanted calls continue and continue and continue.

If you have not seen this on your local PBS and want to learn more about what makes a quarter of the world's population tick this is a great documentary about the Buddha - his life - his search for why there is pain in the world and his dis-satisfaction with the rituals in Hinduism that not only did not answer his questions but was not brinding him closer to God or the truth.  Some of the explanation is referring to how as Christians we have the same understanding and belief using other words.
