Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name)  and post their answer.  If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they  can also suggest one of the title words or  a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only  one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Here is my August 8 run through:

__  __  __  __     __  __        ___  ___  ___     S ___ ____ ___

4 word title, the last word has 4 letters and begins with S.

Remember tho when you give one letter  to start the game you may not give ALL the times in the title that letter occurs,  in other words, there MAY be another S or two.

This morning we have O and E suggested. This book is a runaway best seller, it's in every store and overseas. It's  small and very unlikely to be on any bestseller list, it's something of a freak and MAY in fact herald something different in the country, actually.

I'll choose E: there are no E's in the title. :)

I didn't know that little rule Ginny - thanks

Haven't got an inkling for this title.

I thought we were playing that you DID have to give all the times a letter appears.  Certainly we have been doing that when a letter is guessed.

Yeah IF somebody had guessed an S, then you'd have to put in every time an S appeared; however,  to start the initial title  out, you don't have to give every one, or so I thought. I dunno here, perhaps the game has evolved  from its initial concept, which is a good thing! If so I am sorry I missed it. This IS serious. hahahaaa Serious is not one of the words, tho. :)

At any rate there ARE more S's but so far nobody has guessed an S,  she said blatantly. :)

And somewhat ingeniously...until today. I see a question on the S issue.

I'll go ahead and add the  S's! hahaha Perhaps one of the words of the title is now fresh in my mind. hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa love it.

S ___ ___ ___       ___ ___     ___ ___ ___

  S ___ ___  S

Now that's two clues for August 8, also not in the rules. :)

Sh*t My Dad Says

I could do without all the F words. My Dad confined himself to things like Smellery Bean (Ellory Queen) and Stinky Pee (Pinky Lee). He liked to get his "mords wixed" on purpose and he could wiggle his ears. He didn't own a gun and didn't watch sports so we missed out on potential ripe comments. No male bonding rituals at our house, he was the proud father of three girls.

Joan K, yes I think when the person who poses the question comes by for that day, they should answer all questions, sure. No it's not an illustrated book. (Maybe just as well. hahaha)

I shouldn't come back in here today but Frybabe is right! It's S**** My Dad Says, by Justin Halpern, based on the very irreverent often obscene  wit and wisdom of his father, posted on Twitter, which has become a sensation. In fact it's the top of today's NY Times list.

Here's the website and a sample:

http://shitmydadsays.tumblr.com/

June 28: "Don’t focus on the one guy who hates you. You don’t go to the park and set your picnic down next to the only pile of dog s***."

That's one of few without the F word. hahaha

Congratulations, Frybabe! hahaha :) Your turn!

Oh my goodness, I never heard of it, and unfortunately, this does not look promising, if Ghosts is indeed the title:
Quote

Still, "Ghosts of Vesuvius" has flaws, some of them worth mentioning. At a stylistic level, Pellegrino loves ellipsis...far too much... He never learned, or doesn't care, that three dots is not an acceptable end to a sentence, let alone to a sentence fragment, and the ellipses become wearying. (As do his endless paragraphic, paranthetical remarks.) Furthermore, Pellegrino makes a few factual errors: the books of Lucretius were not burned by the Roman Church; they were in fact copied and recopied by monks. The upheaval in the Byzantine Empire of 537 CE (which Pellegrino contends was caused by a volcanic eruption in the Pacific) did not lead to that empire's 'downfall,' as that polity continued to exist, albeit never so gloriously, for another nine hundred years. Similarly, Pellegrino makes much of the fact that Marcus Tullius Cicero 'disappeared' in 43 BCE, when any competent classicist (or student of third-semester Latin) can tell you that Cicero was murdered by Mark Antony's goons on the Appian Way, and his head and hands were displayed on the Rostrum in the Forum as a warning to others who opposed Antony.

Yet these are minor quibbles. In the end, although Pellegrino's book provides a treasure trove on information on many more topics than the 79 CE Vesuvius eruption, it is far more an account of Pellegrino wrestling with the fact of September 11 than it is a work of nonfiction. Much as Bruce Springsteen did with "The Rising," and Art Spiegelman did with "In the Shadow of No Towers," Pellegrino stares into the abyss of humanity's nadir, and emerges with a flawed but brilliant masterpiece.

Congratulations Joan P, I am sure you are right, what on earth made you think of it?

Oh dear, that does not look promising. Of all the stylistic affectations (including my question marks),  the use of ellipsis drives me absolutely nuts.      hahahaa

And 9/11. And CICERO!!!! Wow. His heroic death is very well documented, down to his last words, actually.

Have you read it Margie? Do you recommend it? Wow. I love hearing about new books but that one is going to take some more persuasion.

Ghosts of Vesuvius!   Good quiz, but not such a good book, as I bought it quite a while ago and did not even finish it.  As I recall, it skates through too many subjects, and has less on Vesuvius than expected.   So do read all the reviews before buying, IMO.

Well done, JoanP!

JoanP is correct.

Ginny, I remember this book was mentioned in one or two of our discussions. I don't remember anyone giving us a review. Thanks for yours. I will keep the errors in mind. BTW, wasn't CICERO's tongue also cut out when he was murdered?

Mippy, I am only into the book by seven pages so far. I've was reading it while doing some computer maintenance that took a while (virus scan, defrag, etc.). I am already wondering if it is worth finishing. I may just cherry pick through it. It stands a good chance of going the the used book store rather than staying in my library.

In his book, Pellegrino gave a definition of a "jiffy" as the length of time it takes for light to travel the diameter of a proton.  I am not sure that is quite accurate either. Here is what Wikipedia says:
Quote
The speed of light in a vacuum provides a convenient universal relationship between distance and time, so in physics (particularly in quantum physics) and often in chemistry, a jiffy is defined as the time taken for light to travel some specified distance. In astrophysics and quantum physics a jiffy is, as defined by Edward R. Harrison,[6] the time it takes for light to travel one fermi, which is the size of a nucleon. One fermi is 10−15 m, so a jiffy is about 3 × 10−24 seconds.

Sometimes a jiffy is used as a synonym for the Planck interval, about 5.4 × 10−44 seconds, which is the time it takes light to traverse the smallest meaningful length, the Planck length. In this quantum mechanical definition, a jiffy is the shortest theoretically possible time period that can be measured within one standard deviation of accuracy.[7] In practice, current technology can come nowhere near making this brief a time measurement.

Now wouldn't a neucleon be a little larger than a proton if it contains both a neutron and a proton? Very nit-picky, I know.

Gosh you're way over my head with the protons but I'm thinking Cicero had his tongue because the legend is, when his hands and head were placed on the  Rostra in Rome, Fulvia (I think it was, I'll look it up) drove a needle thru his tongue.

(I guess you could say there was some animosity there among some for his outspokenness). :) I'll look it up, tho.

I must have mis-remembered then. I think Fulvia wanted to make sure he couldn't speak anymore, anywhere, anytime. Cicero must have really been something to to see in action.

Am I right in remembering that Cicero could have continued to flee in a boat. But he was seasick, and decided he'd rather be caught than be seasick any more? If so, I sympathize with him.

Joan K, you have a good memory.  Plutarch offers several probable causes why Cicero disembarked and started out on foot on the Appian  Way to Rome, but Everitt disputes this, citing that  when he was killed he was, in fact, on his way to the sea and an escape boat.   He had also just completed several voyages, despite his dislike of sailing.

Cicero is probably one of the most enigmatic people who ever lived, nervous, emotional, brilliant, and, at the end, incredibly courageous. The proscriptions lists  must have been a horrendous time, it scares me reading about them.  When Cicero heard he and his family had been put on the list, he and his brother set out for his villa  in Astura  in order to sail to Macedonia and join Brutus.  But his brother wanted to go back and get more money for the trip.   Bounty hunters (rewards were tremendous for killing those on the list) caught his brother and his son first, betrayed by their servants.    Cicero heard the news and caught a boat  and sailed 20 miles to Circaeum. This is when he disembarked and began walking, over 12 miles, back to Rome.

Nobody knows why he disembarked. Perhaps he thought a last minute reprieve might occur, things in Rome were swinging back and forth. He turned back to his villa in Astura,  from which he then sailed 60 miles to Caeta. Here occurred the famous crows on the yardarm incident.

His servants, after another crow incident in his bedroom,  entreated him and physically induced  him to begin a journey toward the sea and escape.  It was too late.

The last chapter of Everitt's book makes the past come alive:   the chapter is  called Death at the Seaside and the title of the book  is Cicero.

Mippy, thank you.  I HOPE we'll get to Cicero in the 300 this term, and I'm thinking that talk about the book titles here enhances this discussion, I've enjoyed hearing about each title, some of the discussions on the titles actually have led to my getting the books.

But when the new Classics Lounge opens we can say something about Cicero and all the different authors the classes will take up as they go, good idea.

Let's see - an "i", an "s" or an "o"...I think I'll take the "i" - there is NO "i" in this book's title.

Another clue - a mystery, a classic, adapted to many  radio, film and stage productions  over the years...
