THE HEN OF THE BASKERVILLES; A MEG LANGSLOW MYSTERY

Clever title.  Sounds like a "cozy" mystery

Most of Donna Andrew's Meg Langslow mysteries feature a bird in the title, titles likeWe'll Always Have Parrots, Cockatiels at Seven, and Owl's Well That Ends Well. She has been nominated numerous times for her books, but only You've Got Murder (Turing Hopper series) received an award. The titles do sound like fun.

My library has them in so I will be ordering the first one whenever they get the blasted site fixed again. Right now it won't let me put anything in my cart. Bugs keep cropping up in the new system. Everytime one gets fixed another shows up. Last week the computer I use decided it not to connect to the server. They changed out the computer, but the replacement went down too.

Looks like my library has all of them, so they must be popular.  Starting with an early one, I put her Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon on hold -- It won an Agatha award.

I hate it when my library's computer system goes ker-plunk.  Usually happens just before a long weekend.

Ready for another puzzle?  Fiction.

I read and loved this story (novella) a few years back. It's by a multi-talented person whom most everyone has heard of, perhaps not as an author, but who does some great writing here.   A poignant, humorous, tender story.

I love Donna Andrews, especially the early ones. Her latest few aren't good (sob). "Crouching Buzzard, Leaping Loon" is my absolute favorite. It's hilarious! Let us know how you like it.

I forgot to mention a great play written by Steve Martin:  PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE.  I haven't read it, but we saw the play and nearly fell out of our chairs laughing.  It depicts an imaginary meeting of Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in 1904 Parris, exploring the impact of art and science on our rapidly changing society.  A surprise visit by Elvis added some satiric commentary from a late-20th century perspective.

PETER MATTHIESSEN

I have his IN PARADISE (a novel) on order.   Amazon sent me yesterday a iist of recommended books by him -- once Amazon sees you are interested in an author they let you know everything they have written by him.

Marj, I saw his new book listed. Let me know how you like it when you've read it.

I first became acquainted with Peter Matthiessen in the 70's when he and George Schaller wrote for National Wildlife and National Geographic. I read Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard, have his Sand Rivers, and his novel, Shadow Country. There are several other book of non-fiction I would like to read someday. I also read Schaller's Stones of Silence.

It is hard to believe that Mattiessen is now 86, which makes Schaller about 80. Well, it is hard to believe in the 70's I was only in my 30's. These are men worth spending time with, if only in their books.

I'm looking forward to Matthiessen's In Paradise.  I'll let you know what I think of it.   I'd also heard of The Snow Leopard and would like to read that one.  I'd not heard of Stones of Silence, but that sounds fascinating.

I can't believe I'm 81 years old this month!  So many books to read.  As a song I heard this weekend on Garrison Keillor's show said -- "Oh Lord, give me just a little more time, I've got so many things to do yet."

NEW PUZZLE.  GUESS THE AUTHOR:

Nobel Prize winner, not American.  Wrote fiction.  I have his last book on my TBR list, written not long before he died in 2010.  (This should be fairly easy)

Marj, Schaller's book is quite interesting though more related to his study of sheep/goats in the Himalayas. Mathhiessen's book is more introspective. Both books were interesting, especially if you are interested in animal conservation. Schaller is a biologist, Matthiessen was a naturalist and writer. I say was because I just discovered that Mattiessen passed away on the fifth of this month.
