JHUMPA LAHIRI    (I  have her book, The Lowland, on my TBR list.  It was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.  I think she received a Pulitzer for Interpreter of Maladies.)  Have you read anything by her?

Winner!

Marj, I have The Namesake in my TBR pile and have seen the movie. The Namesake and The Lowland are her only two full length novels. The rest are short stories and short story collections. I believe she has written a few non-fiction pieces too. Lahiri's writing concentrates on immigrants and their integration into a new culture. She was born in London of Bengali immigrants who then moved to America when she was two. Appointed by President Obama, she is a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

WINNER!!!   WINNER!!     PAT IS THE WINNER!!

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena is a debut novel by Anthony Marra and gets 4-1/2 stars from readers at Amazon.

It was nominated for another book group to which I belong, and I thought it sounded interesting.  It won several book awards and was the New York Times' Notable Book of the Year and Washington Post 's Top Ten Book of the Year.

The book description says, "In a small rural village in Chechnya, eight-year-old Havaa watches from the woods as Russian soldiers abduct her father in the middle of the night and then set fire to her home. When their lifelong neighbor Akhmed finds Havaa hiding in the forest with a strange blue suitcase, he makes a decision that will forever change their lives."  Booklist says, " All of the characters are closely tied together in ways that Marra takes his time revealing, even as he beautifully renders the way we long to connect and the lengths we will go to endure."

Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell. Could be interesting reading. I'd like to read his Homage to Catalonia too. Too bad he died so young. No telling what he could have accomplished with his writing.

     WINNER  WINNER WINNER

Good job, Frybabe, to get it so quickly.  I've read it; it is a good read.  Homage to Catalonia is interesting, but somewhat flawed by a long section expounding on the particular injustice that made him feel he had to write the book.  It's definitely worth reading.

I went through an Orwell phase, have read just about everything he's written.  I turned off on him when I learned that he occasionally made up minor details.  Not anything important, but to a scientist (me) that's an unforgivable sin, and it should be to a journalist, especially one concerned with political lies.   He's good reading.  There are a number of excellent essays about a wide variety of subjects.  Once, back in the 60s, I read an article about Ghandi in the New York Times Sunday magazine, by an Indian, which had whole paragraphs lifted from Orwell's essay.
