I am surprised that no none knows this. The character is not common today, but the books are still available; most are out of print. Aside from the series, there was a board game and at least one silent movie short. There used to be a restaurant in Columbia, CA named after the character.

I'm afraid I never read children's books.  The first books I remember reading were the Tarzan books and the Nancy Drew mysteries.

I remember Billy Whiskers from somewhere, but don't remember where. I don't think I ever read any of them.

I saw the movie years ago directed by Clint Eastwood and starring John Cusack and Kevin Spacey, but I don't remember much about it.  Always meant to read the book, but as often happens, never got around to it.
