Popular history, written in several volumes, still read today after over 200 years. This should be an easy one for you.

PatH, I guess I did say easy. Can you believe that the first of Gibbon's volumes was printed in 1776?

Gibbon believed that the downfall of the Roman Empire was caused by the loss of "civic virtue" which permitted a growing dependence on "barbarian mercenaries" to defend the Empire. He also believed that the growing popularity of Christianity contributed to the decline because of its focus away from instant gratification and towards the delayed gratification of heavenly rewards.

Congrats PatH for getting that so fast!

I'm impressed, Frybabe!  Interesting.  I checked our libraries and there is only one copy in all our southern Calif. libraries, and it's been checked out.  1,258 pages!

Portland sounds like fun.  Bet it was cooler than the 90's we've been having in the Los Angeles area.

Lets try the E's.

Portland is fun, especially since my daughters, grandchildren, and other family members have been celebrating my birthday in a rather copious fashion.

Thanks for the link, Bluebird.  I love that series, have read them all many times, and am always glad to see more about the family, especially to see actual pictures of Ma and Pa.
