Good Morning!
My name is Anke, I'm from Nuremberg, Germany. Yes, that Nuremberg.

I returned to Europe in 1994 after having lived in the United States for twenty years. My mother was paralyzed due to a severe stroke, Dad was overwhelmed, and at the time I really felt I had no choice but to return home. I'm sixty years old, the mother of a son who is 38 and lives at the Texas/Louisiana border, only half an hour's drive from the Gulf coast. I'm about to become a grandmother at the end of February 2013 and so thrilled at the thought of embracing a grandbaby.

We're a mixed-race family. African-American and Choctaw on my former husband's side; German, French, Serb and Roma on mine. It was a wild ride back in the mid 1970's when we married and unions such as ours were often not viewed favorably, especially in our small town.

So here I am, looking very much forward to sharing thoughts and discussions across the miles.

Anke

Welcome AnkaDee!  What a fascinating life you have had!

I am one of the few UK members here - I live near Edinburgh but come from London originally.  I presume you are still in Germany?

SeniorLearn is such a great site - everyone is very friendly, so do join in some (or all) of our discussions.  As you will have seen, some of them focus on one topic (like mysteries) or even one book, but mostly we ramble all over the place - trying to keep to a vaguely book-related theme (but often failing...)

Best wishes,

Rosemary

Hello all you wonderful Seniornet members.
I'm Lars-Olof Andersson from Sweden, but mostly known under my nickname, which is Olle (short for Olof).
It struck me that since I was in this noble company I still recognize lots of names.
I'm looking forward to have some conversations with you, and I don't mind if you'll correct me when i make some errors in the language. Which I'm certain I'll do

Hello Marcie, JoanK, JoanP and all of you that still remember me.
It' been a while since my last post, and I'm happy to be with you again.
It was such an coincidence that your choice for the first reading adventure should be Travels with Herodotus.
I had planned to read it anyway, so it gave me a kind of flashback and memories of you all.
I have read most of your comments and found many common reactions to my own.
But I'm a bit surprised of your reactions and speculating of RK was a spy or not.
I guess that is more important for an American or English person.
For me as a stupid Swede, it isn't interesting at all.
Poland isn't far from Sweden and we (the common people) didn't ever think about a Russian invasion or spies from behind the iron curtain.
That might surprise the English speaking nations, but that's the way it was.
Naive? Probably, but not unusual.
When he describes  his school material or the dress code from Eastern Europe, it is in itself a criticism of the blinds the lived behind.
He describe the borders he wanted to cross.
And luckily he - as a journalist - got the opportunity to see the other (outside) world.
No wonder that he accepted to send back some information.
Wouldn't you?

Olle, please, please will you copy your post on Kapuscinski in the book discussion? I assure you, there are others who feel as you do.  Just as Kapus was searching for Herodotus' motivations for his life of travel/ reporting, our readers questioned Kapuscinski's.  One consideration, only one, is that he was a spy.  Come join us, Olle, please - and share your broader vision with us! We would really appreciate your input!

Some thoughts about JK: s way of dressing.
It was well known (here in Sweden) that people = men, from behind the curtain, were dressed ridiculous. They looked like our grandparents did when we were kids.
But, you know. Living in a country where everybody is dressed as theirs homelands fashion demand, you never think of it, until you actually confront modern-dressed persons.
I don’t disagree with you that JK was a spy. He was born and educated to be a kamerad, as his parents and all his friends. And in a communist region you mustn't say something against the leaders or the state. In fact, I was highly surprised that he dared to comment it (clothes, schoolbooks, respect or pure fear for authorities) at all.
Now I’m waiting to read a little more about Herodotus, which actually was the reason for me to hear learned people cross their opinions and learn me more than just sitting in my chamber.
Now I notice that I haven’t said anything about the questions we were given at the beginning, but all of you have given me much to think about. Thanks for that. By the way. What does IMO and IMHO mean? My guess is "In My (Humble) Opinion". And what about the nickname Puss and Boots? I think it has a double meaning. Which?

Olle, it's good to see you again.  It would be better if you post your thoughts on Kapuscinki's book in the book discussion, rather than here in the Introductions where few people can see them.

This link will take you to the book discussion.  Travels with Herodotus Book Discussion  Please post in this discussion! Really want others to see your posts.  :D

Hello!

I was referred to this forum by a Spark People friend, named Jo.  Who she is here I haven’t a clue. :D  Any way… HI JO!!!

I reside in Michigan and am a farmer of nuts: filberts mostly but grow almonds, pecans, burnt nuts, heart nuts and walnuts. Been retired from corporate America since 2006.  Enjoying my new found free time with crafting, reading, playing with my dogs, gardening and tormenting the family any way I can.

I enjoy most genres but my favorite is Mystery Noir, Steampunk, and Historical Romances. I’ve already joined the April Book of the Month: The Moonstone. Cant wait for that discussion to start. ;D

Hi Pamela and welcome.  This is a great group with lots of lively discussions, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. As someone who lives in Scotland, I've never 'met' a nut farmer -fascinating!  Wish we could grow nuts here - I love macadamia nuts especially, but you hardly ever see them in our shops.

Could you tell us (or maybe just me if everyone else knows...) what 'steampunk' is?

Best wishes,

Rosemary

Hi Scottieluvr. I second Rosemarye's question about Steampunk. I've heard the term but since the term (with punk in it) sounded like something I wouldn't like. When you brought it up, I did a Google and discovered that it is a sub-genre of SciFi and that some of the books and movies I've run across are in that category. I'd love to discuss this more, so come on over and join us in the Science Fiction/Fantasy discussion.

Jane, Rosemarykaye, Frybabe, Marcie:

Hello to everyone and thank you for the warm welcome.

Rosemarykaye: My dear-husband has two cousins who live in Scotland; they were doing missionary work and met, then married Scotsman. They are devoted US expatriates but now YOUR faithful patriots.  ;D Dear-husband interacts with them on Facebook so it’s not a hardship having so much water between them.

Rosemarykaye and Marcie:  Nut farming is awesome! Been at it since 2004. My dear-husband was born and raised on a farm/ranch in the Midwest. He’s my mentor. Starting a nut grove is easy, as is the maintenance and management. It’s my retirement “job”: no office politics, gossip mongering, personality conflicts, long commutes in bad weather, etc… just me and Nature.  I do as she says and all is well in the world.  ;D

I love macadamia nuts too, but can’t grow them where I live either – too cold.

Frybaby: I look forward to our discussion about Steampunk in the Science Fiction section.  Rosemarykaye, please join us there and prepare to be enlightened and converted.  :D

Yes, I’m so looking forward to the Book Club discussion in April. I enjoy Good Reads immensely, because they do feed my addiction with Book of the Month programs and other reading challenges. However the discussions are more like book reviews and grammar critiques. No discussion based solely on the book’s merit. Besides I experienced most of the forums’ activity in the erotica genres but found scant activity in the non-erotica genres. I prefer an all-encompassing, eclectic reading experience, and this is not only generated by my present mood, either.

So here I am, and why I think this may be the Book Club I’ve been searching for. From my exploration the discussions are very diverse and inviting.

Hello!  My name is ElaineBarbara, I live in Chicago, Illinois and I'm very happy to have discovered your site.  The book club where I live is reading Lincoln: Team of Rivals and my assignment is to lead the discussion on June 20th.  It's a rather long book, so I was looking for suggestions for our discussion when I found your wonderful posting of the discussion held here several  years ago.  I read all 54 pages of the posting and decided to join your group.  Our book club chose the book because of the recent movie.  During one of the upcoming summer months, we plan to take a day-trip via Amtrak to Springfield to see the Lincoln Library and Museum.  After we meet, I'll let you know how the discussion went.  After our trip, I'll let you know what interesting things we encountered.  I'm looking forward to getting to know people on this site. Thanks for being here!

Hi ElaineBarbara,

Welcome to the group!  It's very friendly and pretty active, so there's usually someone around who can chat about things that interest you.

I live near Edinburgh in Scotland, but although most of the other members are in the US, I've always felt included.

I hope your book discussion goes well, and also your trip, which sounds great.

Best wishes,

Rosemary

Hi, ElaineBarbara, and welcome.  When we read Team of Rivals, I found it very hard at first to keep the four men straight--she shifts from one to the next so rapidly.  I had to keep a log of each one for a while, until they became clear in my mind.  It's a rewarding book, and I wish you good luck in leading.

Hello from hot and muggy Norther Virginia. I am new to this site this evening. I found it by looking for bookclub information about Old Filth by Jane Gardam. I have enjoyed this book, and the subsequent 2 books by Ms. Gardam. Anyone else like these books?
