The Library
Our library cafe is open 24/7, the welcome mat is always out.
Do come in from daily chores and spend some time with us.

We look forward to hearing from you, about you and the books you are enjoying (or not).

Let the book talk begin here!

Did you all know that David McCullogh received the Freedom Award from Congress? The broadcast is on American History TV (CSPAN 3). He's just started his speech. If you miss it now, 10:50 Sun morn, EST, you can get it on CSPAN "search".

Maryz and all - did you know Pat Conroy died in March? I just learned it by a clue in a crossword puzzle. I some how missed that piece of news.

I did hear that, Jean.  Thanks for passing it along, though.

Not books, but definitely history.   I watched Brian Cranston tonight as LBJ in "All the Way".  It's an amazing production and Cranston is superb.  I grew up in Texas and remember LBJ well.  Cranston deserves any award applicable for his performance.  It's on HBO, available free On Demand until 20 June.

Yes, I saw "All the Way" - just by accident since the title gave me no clue as to what the movie was about. I liked that it gave us some sense of how complicated it is to be president, even if you have the experience and power that LBJ had. Cranston was very good.

Thanks for the Conroy link Bellamarie. That was great. Prince of Tides is on my top three favorite books list.

Just finished The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and loved the book.  I truly had never heard of the Grimke sisters let alone have any prior knowledge they were abolitionists and started the equal rights for women movement back in the 1800's.  I didn't feel too bad not knowing since the author actually lives in the town the Grimke's lived in and their home is still standing and she said she has been passing by it for decades and never knew anything about the family or the women.

I picked up a new book called Paris Is Always a Good Idea by Nicolas Barreau.  Anyone ever read this book or author before?  I have three sets of friends who are just getting back from touring Italy and since I plan to go in a year or so, this title jumped out at me.  I also saw previews for the movie The Light Between Oceans based on the book by M. L. Stedman.  I went to check out the book at the library and it has a long waiting list.  The movie comes out in Sept. guess everyone seeing the preview wants to read the book before the movie is released.

I just got through reading "The Light Between Oceans" Had to get on the library list but went by fast. Well worth the Wait.  Not found any other books by M.L Stedman yet. This was my first one.

There have been so many good reviews of The Light Between Oceans that I bought it for my ipad.  I enjoyed the beginning but as I continued to read I liked it less and less.  I guess I am one of the few that just didn't like the book.

JeanneP. Glad to hear you liked it.  The previews of the movie looks like it will be a really good movie.  I think I remember hearing it was based on a true life event.

FlaJean, interesting to hear how you decided on into the book you didn't care for it.  I have had books like that too.

Mark Twain's "Luck" is the only short story so far that I had read. I guess it was in college, I think it would not have neen considered appropriate for high school at the time.

An example of reading taking me to other places - I'm reading an ebook from the library, Madame Tussaud: a Novel of the French Revolution by Michellen Moran. Not only does it take me to the time, in France, giving me the discussion of many key figures at the lead up to the revolution, but i'm learning about the making of wax figures, about the fashion of the day, and about Versailles! It's a wonderful historical novel and it is not a romance novel pretending to be an historical novel! Madame Tussaud is a strong, single, smart businesswoman who knew many of the important figures of the time. I'm loving it.

Doesn't Steph close up her house in Florida and go to the mountains of western North Carolina for the summer - although I remember her saying the effort was so great last year she was questioning if she wanted to continue summering in North Carolina. Does anyone have her snail mail address so that we could drop her a card?

You know what? If Stephanie  is not looking in, (and she hasn't since the 29th,  at least not on her normal computer),  she can't see your thoughts. Why not write her at her email address (found by clicking on the Member's list at the top of the page and finding her alphabetically),  and express your concern?

OK here is a screen shot of the top of the page.  Callie, can you  see the word Members? That's where you click. In this photo it's right above  my post underneath it.

I had to take her email out to protect her because a bot could have  read it but Mary below shows that apparently in the new iteration you can't see the other Members email which is GREAT, so your emails are secure from prying eyes. I love that.  It's a security thing.  And this is new to me, they've just done some changes to the site and apparently this is something they've implemented. Super.

Alternately you can email me and I will be glad to send you her email.

Wow.  Strange.   Thank you for letting me know.   That's odd, but it's good,  because it protects you.   I have forgotten how many hundreds of  thousands of spammers we have stopped trying to register here so they could see it. Jane would know Marcie would know. However this is good,  it protects you.

So therefore if anybody would like Stephanie's email address you could drop  me a line and  I will be glad to send it to you  by return mail.

My page is the same as Mary Z's.

Thank you for the offer, Ginny but I don't know Steph well enough to e-mail her.  However, I would appreciate it if someone who does would tell her I also hope she comes back soon.

Hot and very humid in central Oklahoma  The heat index is about 115 !!!!  I'm staying in and reading my way through every "chick lit"/"beach book" I can find on my library's e-book list.

That's a good point. Tome is going to write and she can tell her that folks were  asking about her and concerned, that makes sense and she can come see for herself.

I am also flying  to  Boston in the morning so it might be later next week when I can respond again, so that seems to make the most sense.

I appreciate everybody telling us what they see and what they don't.

This is Steph's reply to me about "where she's been".  We'll just give her time, okay?  And then celebrate when she returns.

Need time and rest.. I get cranky about orders as I get older. Will be back when I have worked out how to deal. Steph.. I do miss most of you
