The Library

Our library cafe is open 24/7, the welcome mat is  always out.
Do come in from daily chores and spend some time with us.

We look forward to hearing from you, about you and the books you are enjoying (or not).

Let the book talk begin here!

We also love playing Mexican Train using double twelves.  Another fun game is Spinner using double tens.  Spinner is faster and simpler but also fun.

Beach Bookies from our winter trip.. What was the card game we played one night with almost all of us playing. Fun.. loud and easy. and I cannot remember the name of it..
I do love Mexican Train and there were five of us playing.

Steph, you're thinking of Sequence. A board game with cards.  I love it.  Am going to have to try Mexican Train with real people.  I tried it on line, and whoever said it is right -- very frustrating.

I'm heading to Seattle for Christmas and the one board game we all like is Settlers of Cataan.  I have a set here too, but there's a learning curse, you need at least three to play, and I can't find anyone willing to invest the time.  So it's bridge and I won't complain about that.  Another one my family likes is the French driving game -- Mille Bourn.  Very mean.

I still have my Mille Bourn. Until recently all my jigsaws and games were packed away. They are out on a shelf now. Oh, but to have the time, and someone to play against.

That's why I'm so pleased with our local senior center, FRYBABE. I can play bridge there,
and I'be been going so long they cheerfully adjusted when I lost the last of my hearing.
They make sure I'm following the bidding and we do just fine.

What grand news, JOAN!! Congratulations! You'll soon be sauntering along looking very cosmopolitan with your cane.  :)

Joan since I have been away  TOO LONG I wasnt aware you had a problem BUT BLESS YOU  walking is importan to our self esteem and when we were in DC for the Book Fair OH heavens this is one of my problems I know whom I talking about but momentarilycant recall  One of our great members who uses a cane..we used a
cab to go to our next interest and the cab driver left us off too soon ...when we realized she took her cane and came down HARD on the open front window ..the  people inside hurriedly left and we got back in ....I think the driver was SHOCKED that a woman would do that HE was an arab and I am sure didnt expect it....I told her then and I still think about buying a cane and using it...THEY ARE HANDY IN  MANY WAYS!!!

Well I accidently hit the wrong key   this is a mac that my youngest encourged me to purchase I WISH I HAD IGNORED her advice....I am never able to figure out how to use it.....since I was last here I read two mysteries  Don't Tell a Soul by David Rosenfelt  It was pretty good and the other one was even better. They were mysteries , not gruesome detailed stories....
Have a great day and I hope none of you have been affected by the huge storm system across the West and South we are under a tornado watch until 8 PM  Hold good thoughts for all who have been affected by this massive storm area..

GOD BLESS .anna

JoanG, you sound so up and motivated - you'll be as good as new in no time, the long rehab a distant memory!!  Knowing that you are a fan of Barbara Pym, we are looking forward to seeing you - and everyone in the November discussion of two of her novels, Excellent Women and Quartet in Autumn.  You may have met rosemarykaye from the UK - living in Scotland now.  She has joined us from the Barbara Pym Society - and we hope she'll stay with us permanently!  Here's hoping you will all follow this link right into the discussion getting started now - http://seniorlearn.org/forum/index.php?topic=1728.40  Don't miss this~

Before I forget - I stumbled over this list of 1000 must-read novels put out by the Guardian in the UK -  down under Comedy - alphabetically to Pym...

Oh, and look, there's Ursula Le Guin's Left Hand of Darkness on the list too!

Congratulations on your great progress, Joan.  It's been your sheer determination and courage that have brought you so far and from here there's no stopping you until you can put aside even the cane - except maybe once in a while just for balance..  What a wonderful recovery!!!

Hi JoanG, great news about your recovery.

I'd also like to mention that I have noticed a bunch of new names on SeniorLearn recently, not to mention a few who have been absent for a while. It means more ideas, thoughts, opinions of mull over, and FUN.

Babi, the one time I went over to our Senior Center, I felt like I was an intruder. I got glared at when I walked into the room where they were playing cards. No one asked if I needed help or was I looking for someone. The exercise class was down the hall and down in what appeared to be part of an old gym (with bleachers still there). There wasn't any exercise equipment in sight like what was shown in the township newsletter. I wondered how anyone who had trouble navigating could make it around the part of the building relegated to the Senior Center - multi level rooms. It didn't look very wheelchair friendly. Can't complain too much. After all, the township does provide space. The library branch is upstairs. I've never been in it. The one time I stopped they weren't open yet. There is something just wrong about a library not opening until 11AM, IMHO.

Ah yes,, no senior center in my town.. The library is out at the college, attached and the parking is horrible..I have a computer so no problem, but if you dont , you will fight the college students for the computers.. and it closes by 7pm and is closed at 1pm on both Friday and Saturday, No Sunday hours.. so if you work full time, it is useless. Sigh.. T he town has a teeny little house that is fully booked with things called Bunko..Not a senior friendly community.

My sympathies, FRYBABE. Our center is all on one level, and new faces are greeted with
friendly curiosity. Our 'library' is simply open shelves along a back hall. Maybe theirs
would open earlier if they had a volunteer.
I admit I'm surprised to hear about your community, STEPH. With so many seniors retiring
to Florida, I would have expected every town would have senior services.

I just saw several books in BJ's by Lee Child. They were all part of a Jack Reacher series. I am not familiar with that series. Has anyone read them? Are they good? Since I am trying to save pennies, I didn't but any - yet!

Yes, by all means, read the Jack Reacher series!  If, and I say IF you like Action Adventure.  There's one good guy, and Jack Reacher is him/he (?) Oh, well, you know what I'm talking about!

Sarah Gruen is such a good writer. I am currently reading APE HOUSE about american sign language apes OBONOS chimp like ones whose laboratory was just blone up for what ever reason. all the characters please me. I've read two others of hers but Kindle seems to have removed them probably due to PUBLISHER PRICE problems  and all the prices are going up. same problem  check em at the library if you are interested.

re walking these days with help from Dr. David Ahrens a chiropractor whom I have talked into coming to the house, amazing these days. He has an interesting web page. google knows.

o about walking. it is really sooo important to us isn't it.
. I walk around he house with a walker or a cane and sometimes just with great caution close to things I can grab is needed.  My friend and helper made me get a wheel chair. a 19inch  transfer one which is light but we haven't used it yet. arthritis flare up interferes. the state of california GAVE IT to me for nothing. how about that?

Glad to hear that walking is high on your list.. It  makes life so much easier if you can get around on your own.
It is supposed to get cooler today. We have been having a really hot spell. LOts of humidity.
The State of Florida does little if anything for seniors.. Th e individual counties or towns have the burden.. Some are wonderful. New Smyrna Beach was like a dream. A building, activities, a full time director.. Wow.. Then we moved to Clermont.. Nothing.. nada.. Anything done is done by churches, so if you dont belong to that church, it is difficult to participate. A local church does monthly trips for lunch and fun, but the bus is always full with ladies from that church.. Never an open spot.. Oh well.. I do belong to a widows group.. Started by a woman with a mission. Thank heaven.

The one time I went to a senior club was enough. Honest they were like a pile of little kids. Squabbling amongst themselves over the most stupid things and it was just too much for me. I did go on one trip with them to a concert and that was pretty bad also.

The conversation was not much to write home about either. Talk about air heads. (Maybe I am being a bit catty there!) I just had nothing in common with any of the people there.

Just now the widows group works well for me. I also joined a genealogical society and friends of the library. Both are worthwhile and enjoyable. I wished I liked meetings more, but there are drawbacks to everything. The genealogical society always has a speaker and so it is more fun to do that.
I am reading Cybil Shepherds biography.. Hmm.. Thus far.. what a brat.

"Cutting for Stone" is terrific!  Strong characters, wonderul sense of place (Ethiopa) a little graphic on the surgery parts.  I feel as if I could almost perform a cesarian section if I had to.  NOT!
This novel is written by a man who could be considered cross cultural, born Indian, lived in Africa, now in America.  His characters are similarly "uprooted" from their native lands, for the most part. But they all seem to experience 'epiphanies" or mystical experiences that reveal something significant to them.
it is not your average best-seller, but I am enjoying it so far.

I've never been much of a 'joiner', STEPH, for just that reason. Meetings and committees. I guess I'm just not suited to the 'club' structure.  I'm much better at volunteering. Give me a job and let me do it; I'm happy.

Sounds like something I'd like, too, BELLE.  I've jotted down the title.
I find it's a good idea to do that now.  So often I think I'll remember but
it goes right out of my head.  Obviously there's a hole that needs chinking.

I am reading a most interesting book about the Redwoods in CA.  plus other places in the world.  Did you know that there canopies so large that one can walking around in them?? That there are many different species of plants and animals living in them??
I have found this book to be exciting with the true stories of the tree climbers who are not only climbing these trees but also writing books about them.
The title is:  "The Wild Trees, A Story of Passion and Daring" by Robert Preston.
