The Library

Our library cafe is open 24/7, the welcome mat is always out.
Do come in from daily chores and spend some time with us.

We look forward to hearing from you, about you and the books you are enjoying (or not).

Let the book talk begin here!

Sheila, my condolences. Take care of yourself.

This business of not letting family members know in a timely manner must be more common than I thought. It has happened twice in my family. Mom was very upset to hear more than a month after the fact that Grandma had died. More recently, we found out that our aunt had passed away only when we received notice from a trust administrator regarding the disposition of the trust funds. It is at the least puzzling, at worst very distressful.

I have finished Madame Delphine. Lovely descriptions of the flowers and gardens as well as buildings. The plot is simple. The tone at the beginning led me to believe that the book might end up being a ghost story or have a tragic ending. It was neither. You could categorize as a "love finds a way" kind of book. Not a spectacular book, but it was satisfactory.

Mary Pag e, How interesting.. The movie did a good job of the atmosphere. The saddest thing of course was that her son later surrendered, and by that time, the trial was civil and he was acquitted.. Too late for his Mother. NO idea what happened to the daughter.

If you are around at 11 EDT this morning - please drop in to visit with Helen Simonson, the author of  Major Pettigrew's Last Stand.  You will find us HERE

Please post if you are able to join us.  (If you can't make it, you will be able to read her responses later - after she has left the building...)

These are some of the questions that arose from our discussion of her book that we hope she will address -

Questions for the Author on her Return

Please feel  free to ask follow-up questions - or new ones not on the list.  In her past interview with us, H.S. has been very forthcoming with her responses.

Sheila,
So sorry to hear of your loss of your father.  As Frybabe, take care of yourself.  I certainly hope that you and your daughter can let bygones be bygones soon.  We cannot live in the past.  It makes us not feel well and incomplete.  You and your family will be in my good thoughts and prayers.  God bless!

If you read Helen Simonson's Major Pettigrew and missed her visit with us this morning, you might wanted to read her Interview answers here...blended her first and second session with us in one place -

Sheila - did not get a clue as to the next novel, except to learn that she has started it - AND there is a MOVIE in the works for Major Pettigrew.  One more chance on Thursday pm to see if she drops any hints about her next book.

Bellemere, did you VOTE?  I hope so - funny, we have a three way tie in there...three more days of voting ahead should determine the winners...

Dear Friends.  Thank you, so much, for your kind words and loving support.  You have all touched my heart.

I have learned that once Dad's brokerage firm gets a copy of his death certificate, they will cut me a check for my share of his stocks.  Everything else must go through probate.

I am very grateful to have such good friends, as you, in my life.

Got completely irrational yesterday afternoon and bought out the store of commemorative and collector's issues re the royal wedding.  Bought the Life, Newsweek, People and one published by Legacy in Great Britain.  Spent late afternoon, evening and night slurping up every crumb.

$41.76!  Time for my kids to come collect and haul me off to a loony bin.

Now sated, I plan to keep the best one, the Newsweek (!), and give my daughters the rest.

Just thought I'd report in.  This IS reading.  Well, of a sort.

Steph, you have to get the WEP number of his router and key it in to your iPad.  (Or, at my son's, when his router wouldn't recognize me even with WEP number, I'd unplug and quickly replug a certain USB connection on his system)

My younger daughter just won second prize in her year at her new school for an essay on the Royal Wedding.  She was the only one in the class with no access to internet or TV over the weekend (as we were away at her grandparents' Golden Wedding party), so now I am wondering if she just copied out better quality journalism (from the newspapers we bought) then her classmates culled from the www!

PS I asked her if she got a prize - "yes. gold coins" - "Where are they?" - " I ate them"

MaryPage:  Good for you! I lapped a bit of it up too - but not that much!

You might like this story: my son had a few folks in to watch the wedding together -he called it a wedding party - one guest was a young Asian woman who was more than a little nonplussed about the Royals - while they were singing 'God Save the Queen' the camera focussed on the Queen sitting through the anthem and the Asian girl asked in all innocence "Why isn't she singing too?" ;D

If the tapes are still online look at the one where Charles enters the Abbey and he chit chats with the Queen - he is practically fawning over his mother - but more, look at the expression on the face of Prince Phillip watching his son the entire time - interesting...Body language says a lot...

 "Why isn't she singing too?"

A question like that gets one thinking. And why is the queen sitting? It's an anthem after all. Directed at God. She may be the subject of it, but she is still the servant of God, and has a duty to the Most High. Do Court rituals and protocol trump reverence for the Almighty? God knows there is more at stake in this for her than there is for the nation.

Jonathan:  I'm not sure - the Queen may have been standing. In my mind I can see her alongside Phillip and not down at seated level. So I think she was standing - and as you point out -as she should be for the anthem.
I can never tell a joke properly.  :P

I received this email about our old friend, Ruth Warren from Seniornet, who is in a nursing home in Indiana after suffering a debilitating stroke.  Her friend from old SN, Sharon, sent this.  Please keep both of these ladies in your prayers.

Hello,
Just to let you know that we finally got to see Ruth a few days ago. The weather has been so terrible and we weren't going to go during the "flu" season but we did get up there the other day.

Found her where we left her months ago. In bed. I'm trying not to be so sad about it as I've been trying to think about what one of you dear people said that she is still with us and doing what she wants. Still very hard for me to understand and accept.

She did have some good news and some bad news. The good is that she has always been an avid reader and her kids obtained a huge (it would be hard for Bob to lift it) tote bin filled with paper backs of all kinds. She reads them and the nurses and aides pass them on to others. The bad news is that her right ear is plugged up and so she is struggleing to hear what people are saying. Also, her daughter Carol and her family are moving to Dallas, Tx. Her husband's job is moving there. I'm not sure of the details as to when but sometime this summer. Ben, her grandson, is unsure as to what he is going to do. Her son is still living in CA.

We hope to go more often this summer altho we will be quite busy until early July. We are flying out our youngest daughter and her youngest from Idaho to celebrate our 50th anniversary. A open house at church will be held and we are excited.

That's it for now. You all have a great Mother's Day.......Sharon.

Love the story about the 'modern granny'.  We tried so hard to convince my now-91-year-old, mostly deaf aunt to get on the computer, but she absolutely dug in her heels and refused.  She's still an avid newspaper reader, though, etc.

I think this is such a wonderful idea that they had and can think of others who can't use hearing aids and might benefit from this.  Wouldn't that be great! I must reread the article and see exactly how they did this.

Yes, JoanG, your ears must have been burning as we have all been wondering where you've been~
it was wonderful seeing your post this morning.

Annie, I was interested and puzzled to read of the grannie with her iPod - isn't that a listening device?  How could she hear with it.  Wouldn't an iPad be better for her hearing difficulty?  Am I showing my ignorance with this question?

Came in this morning to bring the results of our recent vote for the Book Club Online discussions in June and July.  Would you believe there was a tie?  A three way tie?  In order to find out where the other votes would have gone - we'll have to have a run-off vote.  Would you mind voting again, please?

Three-Way Tie Requires a Run-OFF Vote for   June & July Discussion-

Okay, JoanP, pay attention!  They are typing into their Ipad or Ipod or a computer and she is reading the message or answering on her Ipod or whatever?? One can do this because of the Sync possibility?  Where are the techies?

Techie: Couldn't this be done with any cell phone that you text with also? The whole point is she's reading and writing or speaking her answer?  She can talk!  I think that's right!
