Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name)  and post their answer.  If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they  can also suggest one of the title words or  a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only  one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Hopefully you are fully recovered now, deems2?  At least you feel well enough to turn on your computer!

Hi JoanP and Gum.  Not well yet.  :o  But better.    :D  I head back to the doctor tomorrow.  A miserable bronchial thing is being passed about around here.  It lasts about three weeks.  I'm on week four.

Let's see, we'll take the T first.  That should give it away.

I was sure that you would get it with your T, JoanP.   ;)  Here are Gum's A's.  Are you working on a painting, Gum?

Gum's A's didn't do Gum much good.

Could I have an M next time?

Deems - I do hope you're over your 'three week' bronchial thing but do remember to take more than usual care for a week or two longer.
Thanks for asking about my work. I usually have a few things on the easels at any one time and get into a frenzy over one or the other - then when that goes flat I do the same on another. Sometimes I get a block on something and it will sit for a while with its face to the wall until suddenly it takes off again... how about you? is there a masterpiece coming along on your easel?

Gum, I went to a book talk with Helen Simonson the other night.  In an aside about spending too much time writing a book, she compared it to spending too much time on a painting.  She said in the end it will come out "brown."  What do you think?

I'm seeing the last two words as  "usual way" -  Other than that, am stumped!  How about a "Y" to answer that question once and for all.

Deems2, does everyone keep telling you to rest?

JoanP Simonson is right about that 'brown' - we call it 'mud'. The trick is in knowing when to stop - or better still, stopping before it's time - while the magic is still there.

How about I just give Frybabe her "U" and that'll solve your problem, JoanP.

T  _  _       _  _  _  _  _

_  _  _  _  _  _  U  S       _  _  _  E

_  _          _  S  _  A  _

_  A  _

Letters guessed:
S, T, A, U

Woohoo!  I love painting discussions.  Yes, everything goes to mud on this continent too.  In fact, when I tell my students that they aren't allowed to use grey, black or brown, they panic.  They have no idea what they will do without brown.  Soon enough, they realise that if they mix almost any three colours (and many times only two), they will end up with brown.  Again and again and again.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.

I'd been thinking memories made and Islam Man, but the US had to be ous, which led to wondrous  which led to life.  I haven't read it, but someone asked me not too long ago if I had.

Now, I'll really be shot down if that's not the title.       ;D

Deems2, do you teach art?

WINNER!!!   WINNER!!!

You got it JoanP.  By Paula McLain.  The next clue would have said something about it being reviewed by a well-known author.  And of course that was Helen Simonson who did say something about it when she came to answer our questions about Major Pettigrew.

Isn't it funny how titles are so obvious - to the one who is posting it?  This classic is not yet a piece of cake, Gum! :D

Are there any more "R" s in the title?

ps - Happy to see you will lurk in the Old Filth discussion.  Do you have any knowledge of anyone who was sent "Home"  as a child?  I've been reading Kipling's Baa Baa Black Sheep in preparation for the discussion.  Heartbreaking.

And yes, I have known a couple of 'Raj orphans' neither of whom seem to have suffered greatly from the separation from their parents - possibly because they went to close family in England.
