Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts  either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

   ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T    __ ___   ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name)  and post their answer.  If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they  can also suggest one of the title words or  a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At  the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only  one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Good Luck !!

Ho ho ho.  You beat me Frybabe.  I just now saw those C's and it hit me.  I'm reading it NOW.  Oh duh, duh, duh.  Congratulations!   Have you read it?  It sure goes off on a bunch of different tangents. Have read more than half and am just now getting a clue to the title.

No, I haven't read it yet Pedln. It came to my attention though, because I have a rather large collection of cookbooks bought over the years. Not as large as before though, because I gave a bunch to my sister when I moved to Allentown way back in 89'.

Speaking of cookbooks, George is still sorting through stuff he inherited from him Mom. He had some buyers in to look at the cookbooks; she had several shelves full in two cabinets. Some of them, he was told, are quite valuable. I've seen them. Some are absolutely ancient. Unfortunately, she did not have the only one I look for, a early 1960's Fanny Farmer. My paperback fell apart. I replaced it with a new Fanny Farmer, but it was in a new format (which I didn't like so much) and some of the recipes had changed. The only way I could get a great pie crust was to follow the FF recipe faithfully. As many pies as I made, I still got that recipe out and read it first. A variation was a whole wheat crust which was great for apple and pumpkin pies. I also used the recipe to make individual spinach pies in fluted tart pans. Yummy!

Tee hee, JoanP. :)  I have the same Fanny Farmer, but I don't see the whole wheat crust, so maybe you want an earlier edition, Frybabe.  I never bothered with a recipe for pie crust, since my mother taught me how to make it when I was quite young, but it's the same proportions as Fannie Farmer.  I'd love to have the whole wheat recipe if you still have it.

I'm a cookbook nut, and have many that I bought to read for pleasure and haven't cooked much from.

I could be mistaken on the whole wheat pie crust, but I thought I remembered it being under the primary as an alternative. Since the 12th Edition didn't come out until 1979, the 1965 Edition has to be the one I used.

Okay, I just when down and checked my cookbooks. The one I have is the 12th Edition, which according to the cover, was completely revised. My 11th Edition paperback did not have all the illustrations the newer hardback does and it certainly didn't have instructions to make pastry in a food processor.

In my collection, I have books that are not just cookbooks, but a bit of history (Jeff Smith), garden tips (Betty Crocker), or recipes from menus/dishes talked about in novels (Sherlock Holmes, The Cat Who series), not to mention Euell Gibbons foraging for wild edible plants. My favorite Euell Gibbons recipe is the Violet syrup for pancakes.

I have it.  (Lobscouse and Spotted Dog, by Anne Chotzinoff Grossman and Lisa Grossman Thomas.)  It's a good example of a reading cookbook--a real hoot.  They take every food mentioned in the books (that's a lot) and give quotes tying each to the stories, charmingly explain how they figured out what was the appropriate recipe, and what it tasted like, for good or ill.  All recipes are given.  They discover to their horror that the monstrously fatty dessert puddings are absolutely delicious, and are even better fried up in butter the next day.
