Welcome to our newest brain teaser: BLANKO

The rules are simple:

The Challenger posts either a title or the name of an author, but not both.

Ex:

Title of Book: three words, a prize winning novel:

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ T __ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

What is it?

The Contestants guess the title or author (if it's a challenge on an author's name) and post their answer. If they can, the solve the entire answer. If not, they can also suggest one of the title words or a letter to fill in one of the blanks. One guess per "day" (between appearances of the Challenger) for each contestant.

At the end of the day if the puzzle is not solved, the Challenger will then add only one of the suggested letters the Contestants have suggested, everywhere it appears.

The winner becomes the new Challenger.

Not a guess, just a comment. I thought I knew a lot about classical music and cannot think of a single case of a book inspiring a composer. Obviously am missing something

Hay Mippy - you only have to think opera and ballet - what about Prosper Merimee and his Carmen or Cervantes' Don Quixote - Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet or Midsummer Night's Dream - even Tolstoy's War & Peace and then there's the Nibelungenlied which did so much to inspire Wagner's Ring Cycle -the list is endless.

But I still can't think of one that will fit the letters.

Not having been here before I have a question or two about the modus operandi concerning the challenge,

which is to identify either the title or the author's name of a prize-winning novel,
but not both (why not?)

What exactly is "the entire answer" ?
Does the title have to consist of three words?'
Do the - - - - indicates the precisenumber of letters?
Which letter in the correct answer carries the game forward ?
I'd be grateful for a clarification.

What came to mind immediately when I saw Mippy's post was Schubert's musical rendition of Goethe's poem Erlkönig, which made the poem special. And to think that Goethe, The Master, never even acknowledged the young Austrian composer makes one sad.

Another example is the Nordic myth of the Nibelungs, immortalized by Richard Wagner's cycle of four operas,
Der Ring der Nibelungen.

"Does the title have to consist of three words?'" This particular title is three words
"Do the ___ indicates the number of letters?" yes
"Which letter in the correct answer carries the game forward ?" Each person can guess one letter, an entire word or the entire title, but only once a day. Usually we guess a letter, after a days worth of guesses, the person who posts the quiz gets to select one letter to eliminate or use as the case may be. Then the next round of guesses starts for another day.

Ginny, if I have any of that wrong, please correct.

Zarathustra's Roundelay - Gustav Mahler, part of his 3rd Symphony
FredericK Delius - A Mass of Life, based on text from the book also ended with a "setting" of Zarathustra's Roundelay.

Frybabe that was a great quiz; I was totally stymied. I would also say that the opening theme of Zarathustra, known as Sunrise, was very effective in the beginning of the movie 2001 Space Odyssey

That's what I thought too, until a little over a year ago, when I heard it performed by the London Philharmonic. First they played Gyorgy Ligeti's Atmospheres, which is also part of the music for "2001", then, with no pause, went straight into the Mahler. For a 2001 nut like me, that was stunning. But then, I guess it was the combination of the superb playing, some very helpful program notes, and maybe my brain was finally ready to understand it, I finally felt some of the excitement in the rest of the piece.
