Oh, I agree, PatH - I'm fascinated with Drood too - but concerned at the same time about how far Dickens will get in his tale.  It's eerie to imagine the author pressing on  to complete the next episodes, knowing his time is running out.

Pete, you will enjoy the Latin lessons as you continue with 102 - but it would be a real treat to have a BRIT pop into Dickens' Drood discussion - HERE.  We've been wondering at the renewed interest in his unfinished last novel.  Is this true in Britain too?  I'll be in London next weekend and intend to scour the bookstores for copies of the Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Salve!

I have recently joined Latin 104. My name is Gabrielle Hector and I am retired. I used to work in the City of London but now live in beautiful Somerset in the West country.

I have lived here longer now than I lived in my home town of London, but my children say I still have a cockney accent!

Always regretted not carrying on with Latin over the years. History is my favourite subject and roman History even better!

During the last year I went to a college and went back to the begining as well as taking the next stage with a retired Latin teacher who taught us once a fortnight in a beautiful almost medieval Church hall in the Beautiful Parish of Baltonsborough which is near Glastonbury.

I have now got the bug and am hoping to really knuckle down this year and do some work!

Vale Magista et discipulae! (hope that's right!)

Bow_Belle,
I've just emailed you in response to your email about the text.  It's vital you get into the Latin 104 quickly, since class started Sept. 1 and things are moving right along there.

Here's a link for you.  Please post there and catch up on the classwork that the others are already involved in and the assignments Ginny has given.

Hi Annie,

How are you doing?  I don't see anyone around much anymore.  I have been housebound with Swine Flu and am really cut off from the world.

JoanGrimes:  Sorry to know you've been down with Swine Flu - hope you feel yourself again soon. We've avoided getting it here though there are many many cases of it being reported. Luckily the vaccine is available now and in fact I get my shot tomorrow morning. DH had his injection last week. They say it takes about 2 weeks for the body to make enough antibodies for immunity. Hopefully we'll stay clear of it until the vaccine kicks in.

Take good care of yourself while you recuperate.

Hello, Budd, and welcome! I love to read essays! The lost art of essay reading, that would be fun actually to consider for the future.  What do you write essays about?

Welcome, we are so glad to have you. How did you hear about us?

Hello to all here!
Here's a link to one of our proposed discussions which is scheduled for February.

http://seniorlearn.org/forum/index.php?board=75.0

Entitled "America's Prophet-Moses and the American Story," our author, Bruce Feiler,  takes us on a tour of quotes and historical events referring to Moses who seems to be very important in the history of our country.

Do let us know if you will be joining us by posting at this site.

Hello.

I have finely signed up again. Was in Seniornet for many years under the name JeanneP.  I notice some of the same people here.
Would not let me use my old name.  Manage to get one close to it.

Reading is my passion and so I know I will enjoy finding new books to read.

Last night I finished one that I hated to come to the end of.  "The Divide" by Nicholas Evans.  Great.
First of his I have read.  Lucky to find 2 more in Large Print at the library.

I don't think he is the type of author that is now putting out a book every 6 months. After a couple these people loose my interest.

Welcome to this site, Jeanne. It's great to have you back among us. I looked up Nicholas Evans' website at http://www.nicholasevans.com and he says some interesting things about doing background research for his books and how much time it takes:
"With a period story, however, it’s a bit more tricky. You have to dig deeper and spend more time trying to find things out. And the questions can sometimes be difficult to answer – what did people wear that particular spring? What did they eat? What did they watch on TV and buy in the stores? What was the latest slang? How did they feel about the bigger and even the smaller issues in the world at that time? The answers are always out there somewhere, you just have to find out where to look. All I can say is thank heaven for the internet. How did writers ever manage without it? But it does take time. That’s my story, anyway, and I’m sticking to it. "

Hello fellow readers,

I've been evesdropping in SeniorLearn, and before that SeniorNet, since the late 90's.

You have introduced me to so many wonderful books that I otherwise wouldn't have found, and I'm very grateful.  I think the first book I found in SeniorNet was Personal History, an autobiography by Katherine Graham.

I never would have found Stanley Lombardo's translation of the Iliad without your help, and now I read it every year.  My copy of it is getting a little worn, but I think that just gives it character.  I became a student of ancient history after reading it, and have found many good histories of the Mediterranean area over the years.

I never would have discovered Shadow of the Wind without you folks.  I've recently read the next book in the series (The Angel's Game), and it's comforting to know the Cemetery of Forgotten Books is still in existence.  Thank you.

Welcome, Evergreen!! I love your reading list, pull up a chair and make yourself right at home! Come over to the Library and tell us what you're reading now. (Check out the top blue bar of every page for the words Discussion Index on the left, and scroll down to see what we offer!)

Anybody who rereads the Lombardo Iliad each year can do no wrong in my eyes. :)

What a nice Thanksgiving gift to see you here! Welcome!! What did you think of the new  Zafon? I have it and have not opened it, do I need to reread Shadow of the Wind first? Tell all!

Jeanne Pent, welcome, welcome! What are you reading? Come on over to the Library, too, we'd love to have you.

Well  now this is very nice!

EVERGREEN: WELCOME! I love that Iliad too. Do you remember that wonderful scene where Vulcan makes a sheild for Achilles? just recently, I was in a museum with a lot of classical artifacts, and their was a fragment of a sheild just like that. Chills ran down my spine.

Do come in and tell us what you read and what you would like us to discuss.

Evergreen, good to see you.  When we were reading Iliad, I found that I wanted to read Lombardo's translation aloud, as both the original and this translation were designed.  In fact, I read almost all of it aloud except for 3 chapters late on which are all about who killed whom--A stuck his sword into B (an orphan, but raised by his uncle in some place or other) and the sword went in here and came out there, and this is what spilled out of the wound, and a dark mist overtook him, and one more soul on the way to Hades.  But as Lombardo pointed out, Homer respected everything.  Even the rock that one goddess throws at another has a history, and it's given.  My daughter once found me striding up and down, reading Iliad out loud to no one, but fortunately she already knows I'm crazy, so no harm done.

What Mediterranean histories can you recommend?

Even if you don't want to join the discussions, it encourages us to hear you like them.

Ginny,

Thank you for your kind welcome.

Regarding The  Angel's Game, I would not recommend you re-read the Shadow of the Wind.  I read somewhere (wish I could remember where!) that these books are to be part of a series of four.  Each book is intended to be stand alone, although the four books may have some of the same themes, same characters, same setting at different times, etc.  Angel's Game is set in an earlier time-frame from Shadow of the Wind, and Daniel Sempere appears in both books.

As the third and fourth books come out, I don't want to have to go back and re-read the previous books, because as much as I like Zafon, I'm not willing to spend that much time on his books.

Too many books, too little time!  LOL.

Joan K,

Thanks for your welcome.  I haven't exactly figured out how to post yet, so my replies may look kind of weird.

I've seen pictures of similar shields on the internet, but would like to see one of these shields first hand.  You are indeed lucky.

Pat H,

Thanks for your welcome.

A couple of the books I recall off the top of my scattered brain are:

The Middle Sea by John Norwich.  It is really just a history of the Mediterranean throughout history.

Power, Faith and Fantasy by Michael Oren is a history of America's involvement in the Middle East from 1776 to present.

I guess I'm just interested in the area because it is so rich in history.  I'll try to remember some more titles.

I've been making my way through the Landmark Herodotus, edited by Robert B Strassler, which came out in 2007.  Great book.

Hi Evergreen How very nice it is to meet you. You're obviously keen on history. It's been a long time since I've looked at Herodotus or the Iliad either for that matter though I don't have them in the editions you mention - my copies go back a looong way. But you've got my nose itching to poke it into them again...

I enjoyed shadow of the wind very much and have read it twice for discussion groups - here and my F2F so I really don't want to reread it before I start Zafon's latest...as you say so many books etc...

Hope to see you again in the discussions -

Hello, Avid Readers (like me), Aspiring Authors (like me), and Real Honest To Goodness Established Authors.  I was once a Member in SeniorNet where I was fortunate to meet some really nice people.  So glad to now find SeniorLearn where, hopefully, I will make new contacts.  My most notable claim to fame is the fact that I have lived for years in an exciting part of the world - Alaska.  Here, I have written a number of articles about this "Great Land" that can be viewed by a search of:   "ezinearticles by rainsmurder"    When I learn how to do it, I will attach photo of this old man as he looked when he still had hair and another to show how age deteriorates one.

RAINSMURDER: WELCOME!! Like a lot of people, I have always wanted to go to Alaska, and watch whenever it's shown on TV. (The downside being that I think all Alaskans are risking their lives on crabboats or climbing Denali). Could you recommend some good books set there? Where do you live?

Thank you so much to PatH, Marcie, and JoanK for the warm welcome back to SeniorNet (now SeniorLearn).  Now I wish I had not stayed away so long.  As for books about Alaska that I would recommend, the first three are right here on our coffee table in our living room.  The first is entitled "Southeast Alaska" by Nancy Simmerman.  Since that is where we have lived all these years - in Juneau - and since her book contains so many pictures of our area, it has always been one of our favorites.  Another that is mostly text is called "Land of the Ocean Mists" by Francis E. Caldwell.  This one talks mostly about the area west of Glacier Bay National Park along the ocean coast where my son and I have spent many exciting days.  The third book is "One Man's Wilderness" by Sam Keith.  The adventure he describes make mine pale in comparison.
To those who have never been to Alaska, but hope to do so some day, then I would recommend reading the articles that I mentioned in my first post.  As for those who cannot travel here, the above named books will surely explain what you are missing.

Hello Rainsmurder - welcome! I see you are also an avid reader so you'll find plenty in common with the members here. Your home in Alaska is about as remote to me as my home in Western Australia would be to you. It's truly the wonder of technology that we can be together here in cyberspace.

from the Desiderata  'go placidly admidst the noise and haste....'

hello there
my name is Deb, but use bookad for bookaddict online. Am from Ontario, Canada 1/2 the year, wintering for 5 months or so in Brownsville, Texas.  We travel down in an RV, my husband of 25 years, our dog, a collie-x, Billy & 3 cats.  I have the best of both countries, in their libraries, borrowing from 4 in Ontario, and the 2 in  Brownsville, Texas, though have a bit of a problem with their steadfast limit of 7 books /cardholder.
Main interest in books has been non'fiction for the last 10 years, keeping track of them online at readersopinions.com since 2002.  Have been keeping track of my read books since 1980.  Worst day of my life was when I finally understood that I couldn't possibly read every book in the world.
Have been following the 'around the world group' with their reading suggestions, as I travel vicariously world-wide from my arm chair.
Started reading 'story of civilization' books 2003 with an online group, then when it disbanded found senior.org....then when it went off line didn't realize for some time the group was continuing.  Glad to be back.  Even though didn't contribute online, read and kept up with the sections that were being addressed.  Would appreciate a page reference as to where you are at this time.  Not sure if I follow the mechanics of the web site or maybe I wouldn't have to ask that question.  Anyway glad to be back.  Deb  -bookad
