Ginny and Marcie,

Thank you both for the welcome.  All the time I thought it was you folks who were homeless, but it was actually me who was wandering in the wilderness.  I DIDN'T KNOW WHERE YOU WERE!  I stumbled onto this site completely by accident.

As soon as I figure out this website, I'll go to the books section.  I'm currently reading Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton  by Edward Rice.  What an incredible life he led.

Hello again, everyone!

Hi, Tweety!!  Glad you found us.  Folks, let me introduce you to Tweety.  She lives in the same Warrenton, Virginia area where I am.  She has been having a hard time lately.  Her right arm is in a sling from surgery and I have no idea how she was able to type.  She suffers from chronic pain which often has her feeling depressed.  I learned that she has a degree in history so I suugested that she join us to help keep her mind off her pain and, in addition, find friends who, like herself, like history.

Tweety, I am suggesting that you enter the discussion section and find the discussion, Story of Civilization, where you will find me again and you can join the conversation.  If you have difficulty finding SofC, I'm sure your new friends here will help you.

WELCOME, TWEETY. Do come into the home page and see which discussions interest you. In addition to Story of Civilization, we often read books (fiction and nonfiction) that get into historical subjects. Two are scheduled for January: we're going to discuss Rudyard Kipling's "Kim" so some of us are boning up on The (spying) Game" going on in India at that time.

In nonfiction, we are reading Bruce Feller arguing the influence of Moses on America's values and history.

On a lighter note, we have an ongoing discussion of nonfiction (usually history or biography) we have read, as well as fiction, mysteries, sci-fi, and foreign works.

No matter what your reading tastes, you can find fellow readers here.

Hi..first I must say I am not a senior but am hoping that will not exclude me from the site.  I am a 39 woman and was searching the internet for latin classes available in my area, Tampa, Florida.  I have been unsuccessful to date and this site came up on google when I was searching.  Any information or references would be appreciated.  :)

Welcome,  Pedasi, we are delighted to see you here and somewhat thrilled that you were stalwart enough to persevere to even find us. That's a good omen!

We've got reams of information. I'll give you a link but I'll also tell you how to find it again.

If you go to http://www.seniorlearn.org, that's our Home Page. There, under the photographs (of Latin students) you will see in the black band, the word Classics. if you click on that, you'll see everything we offer.

Here's a shorter link directly to the Latin classes information:

 http://www.seniorlearn.org/classics/

It has  the course descriptions and all kinds of interesting information.

And if you have a specific question, email latin@seniorlearn.org or classicsproject@gmail.com or just ask here and we'll be glad to help.

Welcome, we are so glad to meet you,  and we've got great book discussions, too. You are welcome in any and all. :)

Hi!
Just discovered this site, and I loved the commentary on The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Can't wait to read and discuss the March book.

I am a retired schoolteacher and I love to read. I taught German and English for 30 years in North Carolina.

P.S. My username ghoti is pronounced fish, as per the John Ciardi essay. (gh as in tough, o as in women, ti as in nation. Crazy language, this English)

GHOTI: good to have you here!! I can tell already you'll be a great addition to our discussions! We've never had a fish before. I hadn't thought of that essay in a long time. I used to teach English as a foreign language in Israel, and my students never could master English spelling (I have a bit of trouble with it myself!)

While you're waiting, check out our general discussions: fiction, non-fiction, mystery, sci-fi, poetry. Whatever you read, we discuss it.

Hi, ghoti, and welcome.  Are you a Ciardi fan?  I used to read him eons ago in the Saturday Review.

50 years ago I was fluent in German (2 high school years plus a crash course while living in Zurich).  It's mostly gone now, although I still find that using it feels natural as far as it goes, rather that a decoding exercise.

English spelling is really awful, but I dearly love the richness of the language, with many ways of saying the same thing, each with slightly different overtones.  I wouldn't trade it for any other.

Welcome GOHTI

I am so glad to see you found us.  As Joank, Marcie, and Pat H have said it is easy to see that you are a wonderful addition to our book discussions.

So you do German and English.  I taught French and English.  I love them both.  Most people think French is difficult but really English is much more difficult.

I am really looking forward to getting to know you.

Hello, everyone!

I am currently reading the book What Should I Do With The Rest of My Life?,by Bruce Frankel, which is how I discovered SeniorLearn. Bruce mentioned this site in Robby’s story.  After having a look around here I knew I wanted to be a part of this online community; what a neat group of individuals you have! I was afraid of being rejected because I am not in my fifties yet, but I saw a post by another member who confessed she is not a senior, and she was still welcomed, to my relief.  I didn’t have it in me to lie about my age.

I am 44 this year, have been married 21 years, and will be an Empty Nester very soon.  I spent most of 2009 in a funk over the changes that were taking place in my relationship with my daughter and not knowing what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.  Long story short, I have returned to college full-time and am working toward my degree in Gerontology.
I love being around, and talking to seniors, absorbing all their years of wisdom and understanding, so I’m especially excited about being in a book group with you all.   With a lifetime of reading under my belt, I have never had the privilege of being in a book club, so this is a new, welcomed experience for me.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

It is indeed a pleasure to have you join us.We have a great group of people here who love books and love to read them and discuss them together.

Hi, Donna! We're always very glad to welcome another reader. It's wonderful that you are returning to college and studying Gerontology. There is probably a lot of new information you'll be learning about health, the mind and lifespan development. Perhaps you'll share with us any interesting books you're reading.

Hi Donna!

So pleased you are reading Bruce Frankel's book, "What Should I Do With the Rest of My Life" and especially pleased that reading the chapter about me led you to this group.  As indicated in the book, I have been with this wonderful friendly group for years and years and consider them part of my family. And, yes, we have many here who are not yet ready to call themselves seniors but love the warmth and stimulation of thoughts.

Congratulations that you have returned to college full-time.  In addition to my being a Clinical Psychologist, I also hold a certification in Gerontology from Syracuse University.  It's a fascinating subject.  If you keep this up, maybe some day an author will write a chapter about you!!

If you are interested in history, come join us in "Story of Civilization."

Donna- How impressive your post is.  Congrats to you for taking control and being  productive by choosing to return to college.  When the "empty nester" comes around it is so difficult to get a grip on where we belong in the whole grand schemse of things.
Gerentology is a BIGGIE now-a-days, particularly because there happen to be so many of us around yet.
Do not be the least bit shy or hesitant to join us, ask questions, suggest a book- what ever it is, we welcome you with open arms.  My daughter is 44 as well and I keep trying to get her in here and join our group.

WELCOME ABOARD!!

Welcome, Donna!  How nice to read  your most cheery post and the news that you will join us.  We will be glad to have you and your posts on any of our books being discussed at the time you peek in.

Congrats on returning to college. That's a wonderful way to fly from the empty nest.  Off to a new life that will open your eyes and give you much to think about. I went to work when that happened to me at a local 2 yr tech school.  Talk about eye opening!

Welcome, Donna.  It's great that you're here, and I'm so happy that  you shared with us your plans for the future.  Congratulations and the best of luck in all your future endeavors.

Your post here prompted me this morning to write my library and request Frankel's book.  Thank you for that.

I see in your profile that  you are from my state of Missouri.  I'm in Cape Girardeau.  In which part of the state are you?

DONNAMO: WELCOME WELCOME! Someone once said that a third of our member are not seniors. Don't know where they got that statistic -- we don't check IDs.

I also went back to school when my children were older and made a career change. What an exciting time. If you get too buried in school reading to join an in-depth discussion, do join our general discussions where people report on what they're reading: library, fiction, non-fiction, mystery, science fiction. Or join Robby's Story of Civilization. And I always end a trip to Seniornet with a dip into Poetry, to keep me in touch with beauty.

WELCOME DONNAMO!  I bet you will find time in between your course work at college to read a book, so choose one we are discussing and join in.  YOu have a lifetime of reading behind you?  So do we!   I have no idea how old people are, does it matter?  Not when they are in a group discussing a book and sharing insights.  It's great, join us.

It is wonderful that you are going back to school Donna.  I did that myself more than once.  That is an exciting thing to do. Like Robby says it keeps you about 39 forever. Then there are those 15 grandchildren that I have to talk with who help to keep me communicating with young people. Also I have three great grands with whom I also communicate .  My mother is still living and is a 103 years old.  So what will I do with the rest of my life. We shall see.Joan Grimes

I am a 67 yr old lifetime avid reader.  I still work part time in my local public library after 14 years of full time employment at same.  I found your site when I was researching our next book (The Elegance of the Hedgehog) for the library's Reading Club group of which I am the moderator. Welcome, Bijou, it's good to see you here.  If you like non-fiction, have a look at the discussion of "Troublesome Young Men".  It's half over, but it's lively and accessible, so you might enjoy it if that's your kind of thing.

We had a good time discussing "Hedgehog".  It was well-suited to our lengthy style of picking a book apart for a whole month.

Hello, all American fellow seniors,

I have been with you a couple a years ago, reading and discussing the novel "Seven Sisters" by Margaret Drabble.
Before I met you ladies (mostly ladies anyway) I hadn't have had any contact with this witty author.
So in a way you can take credit for learning an old macho-man to accept and even like female writers.
Thanks to you, I have become an enthusiastic reader of Drabble, Margaret Atwood, Joyce Carol Oates, and Siri Hustvedt.
We have a saying in Sweden "gå över ån efter vatten" which means "to cross the river to get water".
That is what i have been doing. Crossing the ocean to find something that I had right in front of my very eyes.

When I read about A S Byatt I was immediately interested.
Not because I have read any of her books, but because I have read and heard a lot of good about her.
So please let me participate in the reading of the June month book discussion.

Your truly admirer

Supposedly the "perfect book." Will we think so? Have never seen a book with such raves, won the  Booker, come on down and let's find out how different she is (if she is) from her sister!

SOOOO good to see you again! How's the weather in  Sweden?
